Decline of PC gaming?? - Page 4

And it is my premise that a game that runs on a PC is not necessarily a PC game. Most FPS are console type games, with simplistic console-type controls, lack of intellect involved, simplistic rewards and gratification. All of which I enjoy, don't get me wrong, I have spent many hours playing Mechwarrior. But it's still console gaming that runs on a PC.

True PC gaming has already had its day. The sun has set, with only a few true PC titles released in any given year.

The American Idolization - the Southwestization - the Walmartization - has already occurred to PC games.

Thats your opinion of course. Not everyone shares your enthusiasm for "complex" type of sims and puzzle games which seem boring and/or tedious to many. Gaming for me is a time to relax and have fun and fast paced FPS games fit the bill - obviously a big portion of the market feels the same. I guess sophisticated gamers will have to take on a new hobby, maybe chess.

I was happy to see Psychonauts released for PC (esp. since the PS2 verison isn't due till the end of June)...and it's cheaper than the Xbox/PS2 version.
Fun game, so far
I like 3rd person (as well as FPS) and there don't seem to be that many out there...
Looking forward to Advent Rising (I think that's the name) by the same company

This Should Clear It Up For You Guys

OH NO! Another console vs pc thread!!!

Listen, I've been gaming since the Sears Fairchild.....pre Atari 2600.....

This is how I see it. I own a pc, Dell 9300 (soon as I get my replacement ) and all 3 current consoles. Neither side is "dying" in the definition that people are thinking. They are slowly merging into one medium.. Look at the XBox specs and now the the Xbox 360 and PS3. Sounds like pc specs to me.. Doesn't Sony call the PS2 the Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System or some garbage?

PC gaming dying! I don't think so. I think it's morphing into a different beast. Sure not as many games are selling but I think its due to the moding factor of games like Half Life, Battlefield, etc. The mods give you months if not years of gameplay from one game. Now MMORPGs have seriously taken hold with World of Warcraft. I normally buy 4+ pc games a month. Since I installed WoW in Dec. I've bought 1!! I've been preaching this for a couple years now in other pc/console forums where this topic has come up. No one listened. Finally a reputable mag (Computer Games magazine) has seen what Im seeing and its the editor in chiefs article this month (think its this month. I get in the mail so Im not sure)

My two cents....thanks

Your condescension and snottiness is expected, typical, and normal for your posts. I will be using the "ignore" feature on this board for the first time.....

Are the new consoles so impressive when all they are doing is rendering at"

NTSC 720X480 30 fps interlaced
720p 1280x720 60 fps progressive
1080i 1920x1080 30 fps interlaced

I mean, sure the PS3 looks nice in the demo but how much actual horsepower is required to do that?? It that impressive? PC's already do much more than that.

Yep, the XPS2 can easily pull more FPS than the Playstation III but the PS3, but aren't TVs limited to a max of 60 FPS???

Traditionally yes...maybe even 30 due to interlaced image. I don't know if that's true anymore with HDTV, Plasma screens, etc...

I wouldn't say PC gaming is dead, but it is not as profitable as it once was. As consoles get more powerful and get better online capabilities, this will hurt PC gaming industry. I would rather play games on my 57in widescreen HDTV with 5.1 surround sound, than on my 9300.

HDTV is 30 FPS for 1080i and 60 FPS for 720P. That's it. All you can get no matter how good your hardware is.

That is oe of the reasons why I think if PC gameing declines why it will be such a loss. You are bloody well stuck with what they want to make. It is a package deal. I guess that is fine if all you want to do is plug in and vege out playing a game.

Edit: I notice my argument is bordering on the philosophical. My apologies. I will now shut the hell up.

You call people that like FPS games retards and devoid of intellect and when I stand up for us low-brow types, YOU get offended? LOL.

Heh I like Chess just as much as everyone else. However, since it requires thinking and strategy, I felt it might be best suited for Heinrich since he is exiting PC gaming due to the huge influx of us simple types that love FPS games.

I agree with many of you concerning the lagging popularity of PC Games. It is obvious that consoles are much more affordable to more people and fulfill one particular purpose. They have made video games the multi-billion dollar industry that it has become. However, myself and I'm sure many of you (not all) started playing console games before you played games on the PC platform. To speak for myself, I wanted something a little bit more out of my gameplay that a console could not provide, and PC's, in my estimation, will always be around to fill that niche, as well as test the limits of what can be conceivebly possible since technological changes occur at a much faster rate on the PC platform.

I have had a few consoles on and off over the years and i feel the same was as you do about them. Though the first game I ever played was Zork or maybe Hunt the Wumpus on the Apple ][ LOL. I agree that PC games will always be there too. I just hate seeing a superior platform fall into apparent disuse.

I have had several consoles on and off. I tried liking my PSP's but lost interest. Bought a PS@ sold it a month later. Bought three xboxs and another ps2 over time sold or retuerned them all. FPS on consoles suck witht hat stupid ass gamepad. Every console game I played I lost interest or just wasnt that much fun so I lost interest to fast. PC gaming will always be my favorite.

Fantastic point! I started on a Sears Fairchild then upgraded to the almighty Atari 2600. I have all 3 current consoles but the pc is overwhelmingly my favorite platform to game on. I haven't used my consoles since Nov.

Besides, as long as games like, Silent Hunter III, Rome Total War, Civilization, and the legions of other excellent games you would be hard pressed to even attempt on a console, keep coming out for the PC, things will be just fine.

Same here.

I find that I spend more money on more crappy console titles that I only play for a week or so, then it gets boring.

Whereas, I spend less money on PC games and A LOT more time(years) playing them.
