3DMark03 6503
3DMark05 2471

This looks great as they are already faster than my 8104 (3DMark05 2285). So the production unit should be just a bit faster still.
Wow, those scores are really impressive!

If it's a 1.6GHz CPU it's not the Turion 64 ML-34, but rather the Turion 64 ML-30. The Turion 64 ML-34 clocks at 1.8GHz, while the production unit will use the Turion 64 ML-37 that clocks at 2.0GHz.

For Turion 64 model numbers see here:

Thank you very much for these good pictures, that usefully complement your very interesting info.

Each of your 3 very useful photos, you posted it twice:
  1. the thumbnail linking to the large photo;
  2. the large photo itself
In my citation above I posted only the linky TN (I replaced each large photo with a parenthesis).

I suggest that you edit your message same way, i.e. by removing the large photos themselves, and keeping only the thumbnails linking to the large photos. Reasons:
  1. First posting (Linky TN): Clicking the TN will open the large photo as such in the browser window, where it will get automatically resized to the window (at least in IE with default settings, and probably as well in other browsers); visitor will click only if interested, so no overdue download burden; the thread will remain convenient to view.
  2. Second posting (large photo): this forces actual download of the 3 large photos, for every visitor, even if he isn't interested and if he is behind a slow 56K connection; even after download, the thread viewing is badly crippled, because the automatical resizing doesn't work on a photo that is just a part of a page, not a page by itself.
Anyway, Thanks again for your careful and interesting information.

Did the trackpad area get warm like it does on the 8100 series laptops?

I'm wondering is the clustering of all of the main heat producers under the trackpad is replicated on the Ferrari 4K design?

for some reason the more i look at this new ferrari the more uglier it looks

the colour scheme and the top lid cover ruin it..

Only to those that want everyone to look at them ;-). I actually like this over the older ferrari design.

I got just as good scores with my 8103 on 3dmark03 lol. I am however inpressed by the looks, looks like instead of painting my 8100 I'll order the chassis from a parts dealer along with the optical drive and have my 8100 be a Ferrari 4000 with a Pentium M

The only thing that doesn't look great is the sides. the top and bottom looks good but the red molded plastic side is kinda distracting. So I might just get the top and bottom and swap in my 8104.

The unit top (not the lid) is good as it's the kinda rubber non skid surface vs the silver coating on the 8104 that some people was worried about it wearing out easily.

yeh that should look good without the red on the sides!

i think that is what somewhat ruins it? not suree..

I'd like to get a Ferrari 4000 but I am wondering...

Will it be upgradeable to dual-core Turion?

AMD's roadmap calls for no change in motherboards so current AMD64 is upgradeable to dual core by swapping in a dual-core CPU and doing a BIOS upgrade. I called Acer and they told me that their desktops are upgradeable but that their laptops have never supported a change in processors. This seems to mean that no BIOS upgrade for dual-core will be made available for Turion notebooks.

AMD's dual-core processors are widely viewed as better than Intel's, so a Turion dual-core upgrade path could be a big selling point. Not providing one seems like a big mistake on Acer's part since I (and others) could wait 6 months for dual-core Turion notebooks or buy notebooks from others. Any info concerning Acer's plans for Turion dual-core, notebook processor upgradeability, or how I might upgrade to dual-core without an Acer BIOS upgrade, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks.

there have already been rumors and pictures of the next gen AMD sockets for both desktop and notebook. the future notebook socket with dual core is supposedly no longer 754; instead it is 638.

don't plan to see dual core until late 2006 at least with taylor on the 638 socket. personally, i think this is the end of life for the 754 turion; a one-two year stunt to get their name in the notebook market before the industry push for 64bit and dual core with intel's merom/napa64 centrino package.

When will the Ferrari 4000 be available for purchase? I had heard may 20th somewhere, but don't see it available. Any ideas?
look for an announcement tomorrow or soon afterwards? Ferrari scored 7th and 8th last weekend in Monaco, so it should be enough of a boost for a launch. Actually having one availible for purchase, I'd say at least another 3 weeks to a month after launch.
