MCE 2005 Why the Misconception???

I have been reading many post lately about people not wanting Windows Media Center Edition 2005 but going for XP Home or Pro. Why the issue? Windows Media Center Edition 2005 is based on Windows XP Pro! When you get an OEM or retail copy of MCE 2005 you get 1 CD (Win XP Pro) and 1 CD (Media Center software). My point is why not get MCE 2005 with your NEW 9880!

I have MCE 2005 CD's right in front of me. On my RMA'D 9860 I installed it. First I installed the Win XP Pro CD, when complete the Media CD. Through out the install it shows in all the captions that this is XP Pro. Also you can go to Microsoft under Media Center and read the forum posts of this same topic.

Sorry I can't now.

This is one link to an article on XP Media Center Edition where it states:

"Windows XP Media Center Edition is a version of Windows XP based on Windows XP Professional and designed around being a Home Entertainment System. It includes specialist optimizations for TV recording and playback, DVD playing, video playback, recording and editing, picture view, music listening, and other functions related to the main features. The latest edition, MCE 2005, was released on October 12th, 2004."

does it sacrifice anything from windows xp professional? my dad's home and office network all use professional, im not sure he would approve of non proffesional...

also, for the windows 64 bit thing, you must have professional right?

Speed, this quote is from the website you provided:

"Media Center Edition 2005 The first edition of MCE available to non-Tier 1 system builders (ie local mom and pop shops), includes support for Media Center Extenders, and CD/DVD-Video burning support. This version also removes the ability for a MCE computer to join a domain."

Isn't the reason of getting Pro normally so you can join a domain or other advanced networking envorionment?

That's what I thought the entire reason of getting Pro is. I don't get it either.

XP Pro has other features XP Home doesn't have.

MCE = PRO - Joining Domain (when the MCE interface is closed) it has everything else PRO has.

unless you are in a good size scale work setting chances of joining a domain is quite low. but how many are buying XP Pro for the other advantages it has over XP Home and the fact Professional sounds much better then Home Edition LOL.

i think going for MCE is good option as it's 20.00 less then PRO

take a spin on the MCE page it looks quite nice IMO vs Home / Pro

did someone just say xp64 is an addon to Pro and Pro only? hence MCE and Home won't honor it?

Exactly, most of the ones on this forum that buy a 9860/9880 get it for games, graphic, and CPU intensive situations. MCE will do all this to the MAX. Only those with special advanced networking issues need Pro.

I use XP Pro because of the Remote Desktop functionality, other than that I don't know the differences.

i was reading the microsoft website and it said something about the 64 bit windows being an addon to xp pro.... DO NOT TRUST ME though... i am most likely completely wrong. check it out for yourself...

wait, just found a probably helpfull link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...e/default.mspx

XP x64 is not an addon, but a full replacement

XP x64 is not an addon to XP Pro. You don't install x64 on top of Pro -- you have to perform an entirely new installation for x64.

The program in question that Microsoft is offering is a trade-in for the Pro license to obtain a license (and media) for x64. Home and MCE are not eligible for this offer.

With MCE, you get the choice for one of the two following features:
1. Domain login and cached crudentials, or
2. Media Center Extenders.

If you choose 1, then MCE has all the features of Pro. If you choose 2 (the default), then those two features are absent from MCE.

In another words, MCE is full fledged Pro. The only concern is whether it will be possible to obtain MCE x64 Edition. (Seems unlikely atm).
