Having trouble setting up home network

Here's the situation:
I have a netgear WGT624 wireless router. Connected to it is a Dell desktop and my i9300 laptop. I've enabled sharing on both computers. But neither computer shoes up on the other's network places. Both are on the same workgroup. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. The last time I did this with 2 desktop's the process was cake and I'm following the same steps.

I found a thread detailing a similar problem and it said to goto command prompt and type "net view \\<ip of other computer>". When I do this, it says "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found."

This is frustrating the heck outta me. Anyone help, please.

I've checked ip's of both the desktop and laptop online and they identical. Should they be different?

Ok here's more info:

On the desktop, I DO have icons for both desktop and laptop BUT when I double click on laptop I get an error which says:

"\\xx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

On the laptop, I can't even double click on workgroup computers. I get a similar error.

Your internal ip's should be the same, your external (192.168.x.x) should be different. Sometimes if you are running different operating systems it can mess it up. If work groups are the same though then they should work. In my network places go to view workgroup computers and see if both are in there. If they aren't then go to control panal > Network connections and then Click Set up a home or small office network. Do this on both computers and make sure the workgroups are the same and windows should set it up for you.

try shutting down all the computers, unplug the routers (not turn off), wait a few minutes. Plug everthing back in and power it up,

Plugback in this order

router
modem
pc's

should hopefully work after that

I've done this so many times you have no idea.

I've also ran the wizard on both computers.

In the wizard, which do I choose..

This comp connects directly.
or
This comp connects through others.

So far I've been choosing the latter.

Coul it be a firewall issue? I have zonealarm on my laptop.

Ha! It WAS zonealarm. I shut it down and now everything works. THis is only a temporary solution since I want the firewall on, but that which allows comp to comp access.

try this

Try opening a webpage and typing in the address http://192.168.1.1/ or click the link, this should prompt you for a password, i have a netgear wgr614 and the default username is 'admin' and the default password is, well 'password', it might be different on yours but i assume not. After you log in on the left hand side you should see a link for attached devices, see if both computers are listed there and it should lists both computers ip address.

too late already

LOL nice my neighbors connecting to my router. Definately don't want that. Why is securing this thing such a pain in the ass? I made a key but how the heck am I supposed to remmeber 25 characters...on second thought that can't be the way...
the router makes the key all you should be making is a passcode to connect. Try using WPA for security as WEP has been haxxored to death
post #15 of 19

also

makes sure you change the default password on your router as it would be just as easy for your neighbor to make the changes as you can right now. On the left hand side you should see a 'set password' shortcut.

Can't I just Turn Access Control On and add the Mac addies of just my two computers?

Yes, you definitely should do that. Remember that your laptop has two MACs: one for wired, one for wireless.

And to address a couple comments made earlier in the thread... If you check the IPs online, both computers will show the same IP (this is the external IP of the router). Internally, each computer will have a 192.168.x.x IP address (this is the internal address - not external, as stated earlier). Each computer should have a unique IP that it obtained from the router via DHCP - you can go to a command prompt on each computer and type ipconfig to see the IP of that computer. If they both have the same address, something is not right. The computers should have the same values for subnet mask and gateway, but they should each have a unique IP address.
