For WinXP, my preference would be:
Mozilla Firefox

Kerio Personal Firewall
Ad-aware Personal Edition
Spybot Search & Destroy

Firefox
NOD32 or Kaspersky AV
Ad-aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
Photoshop
mIRC
Office 2003
Nero Burning Rom
VLC Media Player
Real Alternative
Quicktime Alternative
Flashget
Omega Drivers
WinRAR
SpeedswitchXP
Diskeeper
Acoustica Audio Converter
PowerDVD
Disk Space Inspector

oh and some sort of 3rd party firewall, I'm not sure how good the windows one is. It doesn't seem to have many settings. My router takes care of the firewall part though for me at least.

Misc programs some ppl use:
Newsreaders, dvd rippers/decrypters, torrent stuff, ftp programs, OS customization such as windowblinds, wireless tools.

what people don't understand is that router firewalls only block incoming traffic.
if you accidently install a program that reports information, then your router firewall does nothing to block outgoing traffic, which is a big security risk, and you can prevent programs from calling home if you need to...

install kerio personal firewall it's perfect, much better than norton

You do realize that viruses aren't only spread by downloading things right? There is no reason not to have some sort of AV program.
