A few threads here talking about new laptops coming out with these features..

Can anyone provide release dates, tentative or not, for any of these machines? Are we looking at Oct/Nov, or are we looking at the new year?

In my opinion, we will have a choice of Centrino + ATi 9600 laptops in the U.S. market before Christmas. I base this opinion on the following observations:

1. U.S. vendors buy their laptops from Asian manufacturers.

2. Three Asian manufacturers have already publicized four Centrino + ATi 9600 laptops (that I know of).

3. Many laptop models are not publicized but are instead negotiated privately between U.S. vendors and Asian manufacturers (the publicized ones are the tip of the iceberg).

4. Laptop market trends favor both the Centrino and the ATi 9600. Many customers are demanding good graphics capabilities and good battery life.

5. Capital budgets in many companies must be spent before the end of the year making the 4th quarter the largest one for corporate sales.

6. Christmas in the U.S. is the biggest holiday for consumer spending.

I simply can't imagine that every PC company in America will ignore all of these factors and forgo the market opportunity of offering Centrino + ATi 9600 laptops before Christmas.

Too late for me.. my 8600 is in the second last phase of production. =)

WSXGA+, 1.6 Centrino, 4x DVD+R, 512 DDR, NVIDIA 5650 128 meg, 60 gig 7200rpm, backup battery, a/b/g wireless, free wireless router, bluetooth

For the nice price of $2250 shipped. Nice as the new ones might be (visually and component wise) - I think I bought the 8600 at the perfect time.. it was a great deal.

*Fingers crossed* against kicking myself come November/December. (Not that it really matters, I needed this last month)

Everyone has to go with the best laptop they can afford at the time they need one. There will always be something better coming along. Given your timeframe and budget, I think you made a good choice. However, it is benchmarks like the one below that make me glad that I am in no hurry to buy:
