Dancing LEDs - Page 4

I just finished a first version of the system monitor using the LEDs. It is far from perfect but has the basic functionalities.
Download here

It monitors CPU / memory usage, hdd access and network usage. You can bind these events to the color (with various possible schemes: green to red, green to blue, ...) or the intensity.

I noticed some issues with keyboard input while playing (I am trying to solve this), but it does not happen very often.

Also, you can switch the monitor on/off at any time by pressing CTRL + F12.

It does not save the settings for now, but this is the next feature in my TODO list

update: For now the monitor will not go in the task bar, just minimize it while running. It will also minimize itself if you select another window.

Enjoy!

It seemed a little buggy on my system, but overall it's a great first attempt. This is amazing what you are doing with the LEDs -- and is definately miles ahead of what Dell would do.

(Just hope they don't try doing this with the XPS3 -- you came up with the idea and the scripts first).

I would not mind - They would do all the work

Do not hesitate to describe the bugs - it's always difficult to test when you only have one computer than can actually run the program

sounds great overall, can´t wait to test those when i´m @home.

for now, thx and keep going

Nice One Tride. Very nice.

I no little in the way of programming in C++. I'm mostly just a good ol' hardware/network guy. If I knew more I would love to help you. I do have a few friends who are great programmers - if you need something I'll get all the info I can and help you. I really like this, very innovative Tride. Very very innovative indeed.

Can we give tride a round of applause (GIVE HIM POS REPUTATIONS!!!!)

Works great Tride. I havent had any bugs with it yet. GREAT WORK!

All functions work just like you describe them. It would be perfect to have it in the taskbar. I have been running it all day today and had no problems whatsoever.

Thanks to all of you for the testing

For those who would like to help, here some items from my TODO list:
- a cool icon !
- some small pictures of speaker / vents and back leds to put near the corresponding lines in the interface
- a documentation
- some way to read the GPU temperature (probably something to do with NVidia drivers)
- some way to read remaining battery power (Not sure how usefull this is: You probably do not want the leds when on battery ).
- some way to check whether an email is received on an email account. I can't figure an easy way to do this last one.
- suggestions for more features

SirBA: It really lacks a documentation - sorry. Let me try to write a quick user guide:

You can see four lines in the interface. Each line corresponds to a LED functionality. First line: speaker leds, second line: vent leds, third line: back panel leds, fourth line: intensity (the intensity is set for all the leds at once - it is an hardware limitation).

Now, the first row selects what you want to monitor. For example, select Network in the top left combo box to monitor the Network with the speakers leds. With the second row, you can change the display settings (color going from green to red, green to blue, etc ...).

Now let's have a look at these settings:

Here, the speaker's LEDs monitor the Network, going from green to blue. The vent's LEDs monitor the CPU, going from Green to red. The back panel LED's do not monitor anything, they are set to Red. The intensity do not monitor anything, it is set to 4.

Here are some other settings I like to use:

In this case, the front speaker LEDs are constant red, all the other are turned off. However, the intensity monitors the CPU. So the front LEDs intensity will change with CPU usage, from dark red to bright red.

Great stuff. I think you should open a PayPal email to accept donations for your work. Its not paying you for the app, but paying for your food so you can concentrate on the app!

You can do the email thing but it would apply only to pop accounts. I don't see it working with web based email.

Code would have to be entered for the user to enter the pop email server and the ability to check it to see if new mail is available. Then from there you can add the ability to check multiple accounts with the following variables..

Flash specific color for new email.
Flash/Rotate several colors for showing several pop accounts have new mail.
Fade color for new email.

I personally would like to see something like this in your next release..

Item to monitor - color - effect(blink, fade, random, rotate etc etc for all color possibilities and choices) - front, side or lid (which leds to use) or all.

Id be more than happy to donate some money for your efforts and first dibs on said release above!

Just a thought - why don't you release your code under GPL. Then some of us with spare time and coding experiece may be able to assist with this project. It seems like there is a lot of potential for this utility to continue to evolve.
