Ordered CD/DVD Burner

I changed my mind after receiving my i9300 and upgraded the CD/DVD player to this unit: <8X CD/DVD(DVD+/-RW),SW,I9300/XPS-G2,CUST>

For $125 (tax and shipping) and the fact that they let me keep the original CD player (guess it's not worth much to them) I thought it to be a good upgrade.

But is this the Sony drive I have heard might have some issues? Anyone?

Is there / was there another option?

The sony drive does not have issues, the NEC drive is just preffered because it is a better drive for the same amount of money. By better I mean it is more compatible, not that it is a faster drive, they are both 8x drives. Do you know which one you are getting by the way?

You could have ordered the NEC from Newegg for $105 plus tax and shipping. I just ordered one this morning from Zipzoomfly for $115 (free shipping) cuz it's nearby and a friend works there.

This is what it says:

8X CD/DVD(DVD+/-RW),SW,I9300/XPS-G2,CUST

What do you mean by more compatible? With more types of blank DVD's?

TIA,

The NEC has a better reputation for being able to burn on a variety of media made by different manufacturers. The Sony may have problems with certain types of lower quality media.

I don't think for 129.. it is worth it to go back to dell to order the DVD -burne..
Zoomzipfly or newegg is cheaper..
You can also just return the CD-burner and get a slot-loading DVD-burner...

I didn't know folks sell CD/DVD burners for Dell laptops. Can you point me to a link on newegg.com for this drive? I can't seem to find it (all I see are external.)

Mine is still 'in production" and I'm not sure if it's worth it to hassle for $20, but I would at least like to look at the drive you are describing.....

Hmmmm. And it's compatible, better, etc. than the Sony. No adjustments to faceplate? Any hassles at all?

This only saves me $10!

If I have to mess with the faceplate, etc. it's just not worth the hassle. Only worthwhle if you (or others) tell me it is a "much better" drive than the Sony (which I still don't know is the one I'm getting, I guess.)

Feedback on this?

Some people have reported that the NEC faceplate sticks out an extra mm or so. Do a search for nec about it. I don't have this drive, so I can't confirm.

Acually it will stick in about an eigth of an inch. This site has some pics and also explains the procedure of swapping drives: www.i9300.com

Yup, it sticks in a bit. Looks OK, but I prefer the flush look of OEM. I just swapped bezels. The only thing I'm missing is all the "advertising" on the outside of the drive. It looks like I only have DVD ROM, but I know otherwise.

I thought of changing it as well, but I want the original bezel on so I can ebay that sucker.

I don't know how much of a difference this makes, but it you pay a little more and order it from Dell, the drive will also be covered under Dell's warranty.
