Hooking up my Dell 700m to my Advent HDTV - Page 2

If you get a generic S video cable, you need an audio Y cable also and some patch cords for audio. If you don't have the audio cables either, the Dell price is not a bad one for the whole deal.

peruytu, all s-video cables have the same terminations. some companies put the s-video port up, down, sideways, but the terminal is still the same. just get a generic cable labeled s-video and it will work.

the pack of cables from dell that was provided in the link are extraneous for your needs for a few reasons. the pack comes with composite video combo with rca audio, s-video, and y-adapter audio. the first one is useless to you if you are not connecting composite video and the fact that the kit does not include a s-video to composite adapter which you would need for the 700m. the y-adapter audio cable is only good if you are going to run audio from your 700m to your television. even then you would still need a longer patch cable (i.e. audio cable) since the adpater cable is only a couple inches long. the s-video cable is fine...but if you are just connecting s-video, why get the other cables in the pack?

have you not been reading this thread at all?

the other pins are for composite video and i just looked at my 700m again and its the same shit

peruytu: i think to sum up what everyone has said. plain and simple: YOU ONLY NEED A CABLE LABELED S-VIDEO if you only want to use s-video from your 700m output to your tv s-video input. forget everything else. forget about the number of holes and how the holes are aligned on your 700m versus your tv. YOU ONLY NEED A S-VIDEO CABLE.

Ok I got everything hooked up... the Svideo cable, the composite cables going to the composite input in the tv.
But I only get the desktop picture and nothing else... no icons, no nothing... what is going on?

You're probably in extended desktop mode or the resolution is to big to fully show up on the TV screen. Change the resolution to lower. Or if you're in extended desktop mode go to the display tab of the video driver to enable clone mode or just switch so that video only shows up on the TV.

Just use a standard S-Video to S-Video cable. My 8600 has the same sort of port, and any standard S-Video cable will do. No need to buy adaptors or things. I use mine often with an S-Video to Composite adaptor, and that works great too!

svideo composite??? are you using an adapter?? i thought you wanted to run s-video? anyways, right click the desktop and you will get graphics options and select output to external monitor. make sure you have updated your graphics driver

OK finally did it boys! Just had to mess around with the card settings for "tv output."
Although its far from perfect, its great, I just saw a whole avi movie tonight!
I wish there was something I could do about the fonts though, as you can imagine they're not clear and blurry as hell,m they hurt my eyes after a while. I know you can play around with the fonts but screw it... I just want to play movies on it, and maybe some musice.
Anyways, thanks for all your helps guys, you've been very helpful!

I have watched many Star Trek Enterprise HDTV and Lost HDTV rips and they look great on my dads 76cm Sony Widescreen TV. They way I have the TV output settings on the laptop, I can set the TV to wide and it looks great!! Just like digital TV.

You really need a good HDTV to be able to read text at all on a TV screen. Even on my $2500 Sony XBR the text is blurry and difficult to read. I just got a video card with component outputs for my desktop so I'll see how much clarity I can get out of that.

Which card did you get and how much did you pay for it?
I'm thinking about just putting together an HTPC.
