and that worked? im going to try it now (:

im talking to them now, my order has been in boxing for 3 days now.
they said there was "now" a delay in some of the parts? how can this happen if the laptop has been assembled, tested, and boxed? i ordered nothing extra!

I just off a chat with Dell and am going to be receiving a CD. I was told that they do not have a CD with drivers on it. Sounds pretty hokey but whatever. I got the main thing and that's the OS. I just told them that I wanted to request an Operating System CD and they did it with no issues. Someone was talking about getting a cd(s) with the preinstalled software on it. I requested this as well but was told it was not available either. Maybe I'll get them back on and ask someone else.... Can someone point me in the direction of a step by step process in re formatting and reinstalling the os? Much appreciated.....

Its still slack. They should be required to send you an OS cd along with the licence you paid for when you bought the computer.

slack is right, how much are cdr's these days? very cheap. they get 1000$/system, and cant send each user what they deserve as far as backups go?

this whole putting it on the HD for the user is not very business savy. people want physical backups, and they DONT want to make their own. i really dont mind making my own as i can figure it out easy enough, but dell used to send out these disks. Just is irritating to spend that much money, and have a company tell you to make your own backup. GRRRR

on a side note, i hear there is a seperate partition with the os and just the drivers? or does the 2nd partition have the bloatware on it too? i would like a little more info about the 2nd partition business! thanks all

everyone agrees with me on this issue right? i know all the OEMs are doing this now, instead of giving users a cd. next time ill probably build my own. Sure hope my 6000 is worth this (: lata peeps

I beleive the extra partition is an exact copy of the hd the way it came out of the box (i.e. ALL the bloatware). But there is a tool to burn a seperate OS cd, and I bet it takes less time than chatting with a dell rep until they send you one, then waiting for it to arrive...

there is a tool to copy just OS and driverS? all i need thanks, wheres it at? ill look for it when i get my lappy.

I believe it is in the start menu when you first get it, or so I hear. Wait a little longer and someone with more details will post...

How much did this partition take up on your HDDs? I have a Dell partition on mine, but thats just the standard Dell Diagnostics and takes up less than 50mb. If yours is a full OS restore partition, its would be several hundred MB.

Yet another way they can cheat us out of HDD space (my 60GB is only 55GB when formatted).

Right now under the factory setup, my 60 GB drive is only showing 51.9 GB in capacity.

It's under "Dell Accessories" in the Start menu.

It's in Start*All programs*Dell Accesories*
I think it's called OS recovery disc or something like that. There is also a driver reset tool but that doesn't let you get any drivers, it just resets the ones you have to default I guess. As far as the os recovery, it lets you burn a cd of the os but only once. After you burn the cd, the option to do so disappears. I haven't used this to re-install because I have a cd coming from Dell.

should i get 1gbx1 of 533? or 512x2 for dual channel?

i would lose a future upgrade slot with the 512x2, but the 1gb stick would not run in DC? hmmmmm

It's always better to run a matched pair of ram sticks, so if you aren't planning on increasing the ram anymore anytime soon, it will be cheaper and better to get 2x512.

Gee, that partition must take up a bit. 4GB is alot of space to lose, just because dell are too cheap to ship disc Especially considering we don't get the full 60GB in the first place (yeah, I know every company does that, giving you less that advertised, 1GB = 1000000000bytes)

I got Dell to send me an OS cd last week. The package came in yesterday, but it was a damn XP HOME cd.

After that crap, I decided just to call them, instead of using the chat, to make sure I was understood this time. I got through, and was told to call back later, since the computer system was down (I thought that was funny coming from a PC manufacturer).
I called an hour later, but I got tired of waiting on hold for 30 minutes, so I used the chat thing again.

So, I made sure the individual understood that I needed an XP PRO cd this time. I also asked him if there was a Drivers cd and a cd with the pre-installed applications on it, and he told me that they didn't ship those out since all the applications are preinstalled at the factory.

I'm getting sick of getting the runaround from these guys. I'm fixing to call again and see what the next person says.

Sorry, I'm not going to do that. I have to send them the XP Home cd back anyway.

Why don't you just call them and tell them you need one? That way you won't have to pay anything for it.

i have no phone or i would call.

whats the number anyways? and what do you say?

why dont i have an option to burn a OS cd? its straight from the factory, and i havent done it yet.

im just going to use my drive image 7.0 and take a snap shot, that should work well correct? even if i delete the dell backup partition, i will still back that up first.

i cant see the partition anywhere though, is it hidden?
