The IBM you are getting has ATI Mobility FireGL V3200, which is based on ATI Mobility Radeon X600. So you may expect to see a similar difference between FireGL V3200 and FireGL V5000 (which is in nw8240) as you can seen between X600 and X700. I don't know about CAD performance, but 3DMark03 results are something like this:
X600: 3100
X700: 6100

I looked at the specs on the ATI card on their site.... that's a pretty significant difference between the V32000 and the V5000 card... Clearly the 5000 is the choice...

I'll go back and read your review again... I Never really liked Compaq's in the past... but haven't worked with one since they merged... but these machines sure look nice, and with that card.... I dunno...

have a look at this (page dedicated to nw8240 with ubuntu, useful for debian too - i think it should help you with the more technical problems you might encounter, if any): http://avkrok.net/nw8240/

Hi!

I've found this thread pretty interesting, with lots of tweaks to cool the machine down. I actually have a Dell D610 and I would like to change it. My options are a Dell M70 and the HP nw8240 (PG818ET). Here in Spain the Dell configured with identical components, it's 400 euros more expensive than HP.

After reading reviews, Dell does seem to have a slight advantage in terms of power (Nvidia 1400), but build quality, bulkiness, etc, seems to be worse. What do you think? Have you had the opportunity to compare them?

Another thing that doesn't seem to be clear is the screen quality of the WUXGA model. People talk about the WSXGA+ which seems to be not perfect, but what about the WUXGA? Is it brighter? Not grainy?

Last question, about the quality of the screen lid. I've seen a nx8220 at the office, and the lid doesn't seem to be very good, as the screen oscillates quite a bit (compared to my D610) back and forward if you push it. Is the nw8240 better in this aspect?

Thanks!

A small update. I had a temperature increase problem last two months, and the maximum temperature I got was around 103 celcius when gaming (105 is the critical hardware temperature). I knew that something was wrong. A friendly guy at a maintenance centre (where I happened to visit on my holiday) suggested that it could be dust in the vents and that a vacuum cleaner could help. And indeed it did. It sucked a sizable dust belt from inside the ventilation system, and once it was gone, the temperatures dropped back to normal.

It was a good thing that I was running Notebook Hardware Control, or otherwise I would not have noticed the dangerous temperature increase. I can only imagine how some computers can be broken by dust getting into their vents. So, the lesson is to run a temperature meter and from time to time clean the ventilation system to avoid processor meltdown.
