Finally got mine. Where did you get the latest FireGL drivers from and what version?

Here's the ones on the HP site, but it lists that it's for the x300 and x600. Is this the one you updated with?

I actually downloaded them by using HP Performance Tuning Framework. It is found under Hewlett-Packard in Start -> Program Files.

I'm using SP30403.exe.

I played now Half-Life 2 through. It ran great using 1680x1050 resolution and all high settings (no AA/AF). Temperature got up to 81 degrees, but the keyboard was still only comfortably warm, so the heat didn't hinder playing much at all. I think I must test with FarCry next.

I also tested CS:S video stress test with all settings on high and the following:
16X AF, no AA: 41.79 fps
8X AF, no AA: 42.97 fps
4X AF, no AA: 43.08 fps
0X AF, 2X AA: 36.8 fps
0X AF, 4X AA: 30.93 fps
0X AF, 6X AA: 27.5 fps
4X AF, 2X AA: 31.70 fps
8X AF, 4X AA: 25.84 fps
0X/0X, VSYNC enabled: 40.64 fps

0X/0X was 48.52 fps, which I tested already before.

the nw8240 is really nice, looks liek it did good in the graphics area

Could anyone comment on the performance of this notebook running Half-Life 2 with resolution of say 1280x768 and with 2xAA (and 4xAF) on. I wonder if this notebook can beat Acer TM8104 with its Ati Mobility Radeon X700 running HL2.

Here are results from the CS:S video stress test:

1280x768, All High, 2X AA, 4X AF, Water Reflect All, plus
- VSYNC Disabled: 58 fps
- VSYNC Enabled: 47 fps

Cheers,

Tommi

Sounds like a good deal. Especially with an additional 1Gig of RAm.
In Germany the notebook is around 3100€.

Where did you buy it?
thx for your help

what is the height of the laptop at the back?

Hi I'm new to this so may have posted the wrong link - but Tommi quoted
where he got his machine on another part of the forum (HP General) the
post is

"Just ordered HP Compaq nw8240 - Will receive it in a day or two" #8

sorry this isn't a proper link - I've not learned the ropes yet!

The computer is even more expensive in the UK (I worked out that the UK
price with VAT is approximately £700 or 50% more than what Tommi paid!)

Does anyone know any cheap sources in the UK ? As it stands the Dell M70
is a lot cheaper - I just prefer the looks of the HP nw8240

I bought it at a Finnish net store: www.multitronic.fi . They've got cheap prices, although there are some even more cheaper stores around. I got the RAM from another shop (www.verkkokauppa.com), since I spotted it being sold at a competitive price. It's 1 GB Kingston Value RAM DDR2-533, which I got for 138.90 euros.

I haven't got anything to measure it, but looking at it, I believe it is between 1.3" and 1.4" there. It isn't much more thicker than the front in there.

Im sposed to get this laptop in a few days but im getting the wuxga screen one ... any idea if thia will be less grainy than other ones noted here or just the extra resolution.

Also on the heat side ... if i play a game for 12 hours str8 can the laptop take it .. HP ZD7255 would burn out ...the motherboard on the left would fry . ad i had 3 motherboards changed.
whats normal running temp ?
whats gaming temp aftr approx 1 hour ?

also how good is the gfx card ?

It takes the heat pretty well, although I can't say anything about long term reliability. I've tested the computer in long gaming sessions by playing WoW. The components may heat up to 81-85 degrees and the fan will be blowing all the time (although it is rather silent type). The keyboard's pretty warm all the time, but it's still possible to rest your hand on the machine.

The GFX Card: It's as good as Mobility X700, or even slightly better. I'm playing WoW at all high settings and 1680x1050, and you may find my HL2 and CS:S settings & benchmarks earlier in this thread.

for those interested in the graphics card, here's output from 3dmark 05:
Display Information
Graphics Chipset ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700
Driver Name ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5000
Driver Version 6.14.10.6521
Driver Status WHQL - Not FM Approved
Video Memory 128 MB
Core Clock 357 MHz
Memory Clock 330 MHz

2465 3dmarks was my score (nw8240 2ghz, 60g 7200, 2gig ram)

I wish I could get one in the United States.

are those temperatures in centigrade or fahrenheit? thanks.

However, I ran Mobilemeter indoors, and I was able to get lowest and highest temperatures in different kinds of use. There are 3 different thermal zones, the first probably being the processor.

Web browsing
Temperature 1 (CPU): 48-54
Temperature 2 (GPU): 54-57
Temperature 3: 32.6
HDD Temperature: 37-38

3D Gaming
Tested with Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 1680x1050 max settings in non-direct sunlight
Temperature 1: 70-81*
Temperature 2: 70-81*
Temperature 3: 34-35
HDD Temperature: 37-41
* Highest achieved

I don't know what are typical temperatures for 3D gaming, but temperatures near 80 degrees feel quite high. I think my brother's nw8000 achieved only 50-60 degrees in full load. It's surprising that the computer's topside doesn't heat more with components reaching that high temperatures inside.

The ACPI temperatures for fan speed seem to be the following (relative to Temperature 1):
Level 0 (off): Under 40 degrees
Level 1: 40-59 degrees
Level 2: 60-69 degrees
Level 3: 70-84 degrees
Level 4: 85-99 degrees
Passive Cooling: 100-109 degrees
Critical Temperature: 110 degrees

It's no wonder that the fan is continuously on since the computer is staying at about 50 degrees idle. When the processor is running at 2.0 GHz the temperature will increase to 68 degrees and perhaps above also in 2D use.

Hi There! Are those temperatures centigrade or fahrenheit?
Thanks.

Centigrade (Celcius)

Btw, I tested my brother's nw8000 and it gets up to 70-75 degrees in full load; not 50-60 as I recall in the above quote.

In your original review you tested the VGA output:

Quote:
I tried now the VGA output by using dual displays and ATI hydravision.
Can you give me more details of this test, specifically did you do an extended desktop test or just clone the laptop's display onto the external monitor. I am about to buy my first laptop (as a desktop replacement that will occasionally be transported) and I am addicted to dual-head setups. I'd like confirmation that recent laptops such as the one you reviewed can do dual-head properly, and not just clone the laptop's monitor. To be honest, I'm more looking at getting the nx8220 than the nw8240 simply because it's difficult for me to justify the extra cost of the nw8240. Though it is tempting...
