I am about to buy my first laptop (as a desktop replacement that will occasionally be transported) and I am addicted to dual-head setups. I'd like confirmation that recent laptops such as the one you reviewed can do dual-head properly, and not just clone the laptop's monitor. To be honest, I'm more looking at getting the nx8220 than the nw8240 simply because it's difficult for me to justify the extra cost of the nw8240. Though it is tempting...
I used the external monitor as a secondary one, which provided extra screen space. The laptop panel and the external CRT had different contents and resolutions, and the desktop extended to the external CRT.

Thanks! That's exactly what I wanted to know. Though I'm still veering more towards the nx8220 since in Aus the nw8240 is AUD$1000 more than the nx8220 for the same processor and RAM configuration. This seems a bit much of a difference for basically a (presumably) better GPU and a 3 year warranty vs 1 year warranty. The only other major difference I can see from the specs is the nw8240 has a faster hard drive, though that is smaller. But perhaps the Australian configuration is different to that available elsewhere?

Cinebench

Hi Thread!

Can anyone of you perform a Cinebench2003 Benchmark on the 8240?
I want to purchase this laptop in order to run Cinema 4D and Rhino3 on it, and this Benchmark shows the Performance in these Programs very well.

Link to free Benchmark for WinXP: ftp://ftp3.maxon.net/pub/benchmarks/cinebench_2003.zip
or enter the Website www.maxon.de and follow the links.

thanks-A-lot

P.S.: Anyone with experience withb C4D or Rhino3 on this machine?

...just noticed, that there is a page number 4...

Hi Tommi,

the results tell me the following:
- Rendering: about 30% slower than my Toshiba P20 (P4 3GHz HT)
- OpenGl performance more than doubles my p20 . I use my laptop 95 % with pure OpenGL NURBS-modelling (Rhino3D) so i ordered the HP with 2.13GHz yesterday.
My reseller promised me a good price for my "old" P20, so the decision was extremely easy.

thanks again.
uhoule

P.S.: I hope my eyes won't explode, when i will work on a smaller screen with almost dubled number of pixels (the icon-size in Rhino3D is not really adjustable yet)

P.P.S.:
My desktop is a 2 year old2.6 GHz HT Radeon 9800pro 128MB.
Rendering: about 10% faster than the HP NB.
OpenGL: the HP is 30% faster!

This will be my first NB that's faster than my Desktop.

Next question...
...did anyone upgrade the memory yet.
I never removed a Notebook-Keyboard before.
any known problems?

There are two memory slots: 1 under the keyboard (original memory) and 1 at the bottom (free). If you are upgrading only the free memory slot, it's extremely easy. If you are upgrading both slots, you need to remove the keyboard for the other slot. There should be easy to follow instructions in the manual for upgrading both memory compartments. But I think that the manual comes only on a CD, and thus you must print it, memorize it, or use another computer to read it while working.

And welcome to the group of nw8240 owners.

thx,
unfortunately I have to wait 2 weeks until I can join the party.
But I think it's worth waiting.

hi ... since we are at it ... can anyone tell me what the specs of the WUXGA monitor on a 8240 are? that is what is the horizontal and vertical refresh rates.... couldnt trace that info anywhere ...

any experiences on installing linux on 8240?

by the way, on my system, default windows xp plus hp stuff takes 9 (!!!!!!!) GB. is this right, same with yours? what crap can one pile to get 9 GB? ... well ... just wondering ....

cheers,
adi

as for the dvd burner..that's about the only part of the nw8240 i am slightly disappointed in. it seems to be quite slow for what i'd expect of that quality. i ran a few tests, nero cd/dvd check, after 2 minutes the dvd drive was able to spin up to 2.25x (instead of its rated 8x) for a dvd, i tested with a few. I'm looking into seeing if there's anyway that can be corrected. i have the wuxga monitor, I was also unable to find specs, but if there's a program that you know of that might tell me what its vert and horiz refresh rates are, i'll run it. I tried installing debian a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't initialize X correctly, which i suppose could be related to not knowing the monitors true vert and horiz scan rates. I dont know about that 9gb of HP crap, I haven't reformated yet and my windows directory is only about 1.5 gigs, with a 14 mb HPQ program files directory with some of the hp stuff
post #56 of 111
according to powerstrip, the WUXGA monitor is "LCD5000" and reports its "max horizontal scan frequency" at 119khz, and its max vert at 61. i dont see a range like asked for when configuring X
post #57 of 111

wuxga, debian.... etc ...

installing linux (debian here too) is not a breeze, but it worked for me...

to get X running, I used the ATI drivers (google it).... the configuration tool fglxconfig (or something of the sort) did not configure X from the first try, and it was more or less by chance (i.e. by changins some of the default options presented) that i got it running ...
I guess if you want it, I could send you the configuration file.... might be the easiest solution to get it running ... i got 4 8240 s and thats how i got the other 3 running ...

however, even though I tried several modelines, the gnome screen resolution tool reports 56 hz for the refresh rate, no matter how i try to change the config file ...

... thats why exact specs for the monitor might come in handy [in my rather fuzzy approach to configuring it ....]

well, anyway, thanks for the info, i'll keep tinkering with it ...

i had another issue with debian (no x running), my laptop shut down all of a sudden, then when I tried turning back on, it went on for about 2 seconds, then shut off. Did that 4 times. the only thing that comes to mind is that maybe it overheated?
apparently, first thing to do is to install acpid.... with no power management, it overheats indeed....

I myself did not have this problem at install, but I read about it on other forums and/or such. I did however encounter it while I was getting the wireless to work. The CPU (?) gets into a thermal zone where the system just shuts down ...
