assigning top keys to screensaver

is there a way to make one of the three shortcut keys that currently do nothing useful start a password protected screensaver?

They are programmable, so I wouldn't think that would be a problem. One of them is specifically to start an application so as long as its something the runs in XP, it should be possible. You might have to winkie the program a bit for the password part but other than that, there shouldn't be anything to it.

not that my post will be of much assistance, but i remember on windows ME you could test the screen saver by holding in the F1 key (or something like that) and it would turn on whatever screensaver you have applied, including a password protected one. But I cannot for the life of me remember how it was done. Maybe someone else here will post a reply and defend my sanity, i dont know. Good luck BTW.

thanks for the replies. does anyone else know anything about the f1 thing? if there was a way to do that in xp it would help much.

I *think* that .scr files are the screensaver executables. If you double click them, it shoudl run the screensaver. What you ahve to do is make the key point to the .scr. I'm pretty sure that would work. If not, you could always download the ATI screensavers. Those are executable for sure.

The only problem with the ATI ones is that if Windows initiates them as a screensaver, the password protection works, but if you manually start them, its a 'demo' app, not a screensaver. Weird.

BTW, I too would like to know a shortcut. The way I do it right now is WinKey + L. The screensaver just comes on by itself.

also, something that has to do with programing keys and such, my Dell 8500 has a programmable touchpad, meaning when i tap the upper right hand corner, CS loads, and the lower right corner, Winamp loads. Anyone with a 5680 ( my soon future furchase), is the touchpad able to do that? it isnt needed, i actually thought the idea was useless until i fooled around with it, its a huge time saver on things you use the most and its just sweet to touch part to the laptop and stuff starts loading

I think the touchpad drivers can do that. I, however, dont use them because they dont 'save' the wheel speed for my external mouse. eg. it gets reset every time I unplug the mouse or just reboot.

yeah, i've been using winkey and l for awhile, and was just hoping for a nice way to have instant screensaver with one button push. according to microsoft, it won't let you password protect a screensaver started manually. ever. is this true?
