Frustrating video problem on my 5680, while gaming

my computer is has more than enough horsepower to run games like HL2, but im having a problem in any 3d game i play. EQ, HL2, MVP2005, Psychonauts. The game will run perfectly smoothly for about 5 minutes and then the performance will completely degrade for about 30 seconds. i'm talking about 10 frames per second, even the mouse and game commands respond slowly. i never notice this when not playing 3d games. vsync is off. i quit all other programs including virus software. i'm using the Omega 2.5.90 drivers updated on 9/15/04. the version is 6.14.10.6940

any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot!

edit: i think i'll try updating my BIOS and geting the .97 drivers, this stuff always scares me but i'll report back if it works

updating the BIOS and getting the latest drivers didnt help, this is really frustrating. has anyone had any similar problems? its like the game continues running at normal speed but i lose about 80% of the frames. nothing else really is running in the background that i can tell, and i did a spyware and virus check. any ideas? it only happens in games.

edit: i've now defragged and done a diskscan, no change. if i run a game in windowed mode and alt-tab to focus on something else, like firefox, everything becomes smooth again. but in the background i can see the game chopping up so im assuming this is a video card problem...

I get this EXACT same problem. I posted but got no response. Let me know if you fix it.

ps. I can't even play older games like C&C Generals, the problem still exists. o_O

I've tried everything, virus scan, adaware, bios update, reformat, etc.

i fixed it, i'm so happy. i completely removed my omega drivers using driver cleaner and reinstalled the ones from the sager website, the 7.97's. it's odd because the omegas used to work great, but whatever. i'm completely happy now and the problem has dissapeared hope this works for you!

Check your systems for virus/spyware/malware etc... Something is stealing CPU cycles.

Adaware, spybot, MS antispyware, etc...

I've done it, I've reformatted, Nothing. I have run every single spyware, adware, any scam remover, and test, I can, It's really, really annoying, Especially after you reformat, and you install that game, some drivers and its -still- happening.

I'm not getting that and as you can tell from my sig I play UT2K4, that is CPU dependant, Anything goes wrong I know all about it. you also may have something that's leaking memory. Something you's all have in common. That i wouldn't know.

But what? This computer is a sanctuary, In the year and 1/2 i've had it It's never gotten a virus, I never move it around, It gets cleaned 3 times a week, It just sucks, because Battlefield 2 comes out in a couple of days.

I was recently having a problem like this playing another graphics intensive game. I tried everything - original drivers, catalysts, and omegas, that didn't help at all. Bios was up to date, no ad/spyware or viruses, much more computer horsepower than needed... I was lost. How'd I fix my problem? Temporarily, I sat the 5680 up on cd cases to give it about 1/4" extra clearance at the bottom. Long-term I bought the Vantec Lapcool2. I went from playing at 2 (yes TWO) FPS in this game up to 55, just by doing that!

Might not be that, but if it is it'll help save your components and be able to play your game too.

Tried it, that was the first thing i tried, I set it up about 1" full clearance, and had a fan blowing to give it extra cool, no go...

Did you use the Clean Unsinstall thing, if so, can you link me? I'll give that a try...

Temperature

I've been having this same problem and I have a hunch I know the cause. I haven't fixed it yet, but I think I know the cause.

Download MobileMeter
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/

and leave it running as you are playing a game. What I've recently noticed is that as soon as I experience a framerate crash, the temperature has just hit 80 degrees C. The computer is then somewhat slow and then returns to normal once the temperature falls back to around 70 oC. Going back to the game, the framerate is then fine again.

Let me know if you notice the same temperature patterns. This means all we have to do is figure out a way to cool our comps.

i'm beginning to agree that it might be a heat problem. its just getting to be summer and hot here, that plus the fact that our 5680's are 2 years old now, might mean the fans are wearing down or becoming less effective. i'm gonna try out that mobile meter, and also put some spacers under my laptop to see if that helps any.

http://www.drivercleaner.net/ i just used that one. good luck!

Last night i did a little snooping, what happens is when the problem starts there is a giant 100% cpu usage jump, I now have 30 gigs of space free, did a defrag, and a disk clean and i think the problem is gone, you guys should try... If its not fixed for me, i'll try that drivercleaner, but its -deffinately- not heat, I use to have this thing up a inch off the ground getting excelent ventalation, etc, But that didn't help. Plus, Im right next to a window, and its been really, really cold lately... In california... In.... June.... O.o Anyways, Lets keep working at it boys!

in theory you should Defrag every so often. I do mine once a month.

The fact that there's a giant cpu jump to 100% doesn't mean it isn't a heat problem. I see the same jump in the task manager, but I think it corresponds to the CPU clocking down from 3 ghz (in my case) to 2.4 ghz exactly as the temperature hits 80 degrees. For me, the CPU usage jump always occurs and only occurs when the temperature hits 80.
