For me, the CPU usage jump always occurs and only occurs when the temperature hits 80.
in my case, it isn't a heat problem, Because I have had this ventalated, and it never did a difference, but, i've played for a hour non stop, and it hasn't happened yet, so im optimistic.

Anyways, I guess everyone fixed it since no one is replying, I fixed mine by clearing up some 30 gigs of hard drive space, and defragging and scan disking.

cool
I just re-formatted mine due to an unknown issue, and it's actually running beter now. I won't go into the details, I'm not even sure. lets just say D3D was Fine, open GL ran like ass, Drivers didn't fix it. I've never re-formatted it since I got it so it was due time to.

Thread Starter
i put some spacers under my laptop and my average gametime temp went from 77 to 71C, a big jump that keeps it away from the dreaded 80 degree boundary. i'm feeling confident enough to reinstall the omega drivers.

Mine was fixed by cleaning the heatspreader and reapplying Arctic Silver. Resting temp is now 47 and it never goes above 60. Did you notice the same 80 degrees thing I did, or are you just guessing that's the problem?

Do a search for max fan(Set to 5680 and turn fan on max ) and down load it. I Play Eq and Eq2 and temps never go over 47degrees. I run eq on standard setting and Eq2 on medium settings and no problems. I am useing the lastest Ati drivers with the Info fix.

Since I posted previously and said I thought I had my problem fixed I thought I'd post back and say my problem started up again. Same thing as you guys - it's without a doubt a heat issue and I only get it, like you guys, playing MMORPG 3d-type games. Running maxfan and playing on a lapcool2 in a ~70F room, this is what happens to my system in under 5 minutes. I go from 45+FPS to 2-4. I've tried underclocking using programs found in threads around this site and it definately keeps the temp down, but even underclocking .4Ghz causes 'jumps' in the graphics during gameplay. I have some arctic silver on it's way, if that doesn't help it looks like I'll be playing with the computer sitting on an air conditioner.

Here's an image of what happens to my system:

I can understand the underclocking at certain points because of the serious heat jump, but I have no idea why it is overclocking. I wish I could just underclock it to ~2.6 or 2.8Ghz without any graphics jumps as the temperature would be perfect then and that speed is more than enough for the games I play. I'm going to search for other underclocking programs other than what I could find on this site to see if I can do it

And here we are, same location ingame (so strain would be the same), same external processes running, same everything except I "modded" the lapcool2 to give an extra 1/4" lift.

You'd have thought something this small would have been considered by the dev'l team when designing this laptop, but with the many other flaws it has I'm not totally surprised. They coulda made the pegs lifting it up slightly longer and there really wouldn't be a heat issue. I'm sure if I raised it up to give 1/2" or 1" clearance the heat would drop 5 or more degrees. But as you can see, it never came close to the peak underclocking point. It'd be nice if it could levitate, but with the weight I'm sure that won't be happening

Edit: Also, the small extra lift brought the idle temperature down 6 degrees.

Edit2: Tested it out, lifting the laptop up in the air drops it an extra 4 degrees, bringing the idle temperature from 50 down to 40. It may have went down further, but that darn thing is heavy after 5+mins of holding it up in the air

And if anyone is still listening to me...

I decided to break down and pay the $7 for Arctic Silver 5 and got around to putting it on today (following the guide in the sticky). Here's the results - everything the same as the previous tests with the only change being the arctic silver.

This is 3+hrs of intense graphics gameplay and never once did it even close in on the critical point. No slowdowns, FPS stayed above 35 the entire time even during the heavy firefights that used to bring the gameplay down to 5 or less FPS.

Don't ask me why, but I was skeptical it would actually do a lot. I'm glad I applied it.

Heavy firefights....which game?

Hey. First time reading this thread, used to post here a year or so ago. I'm having the EXACT same problem on my 5690. I haven't tried to use any of the temp gauges or anything, however I did try installing new drivers and that didn't help. This is happening to me in Counter-Strike: Source for the most part, however I just installed Diablo 2 for the first time in a while and it appears to be doing it in that game as well. In D2, my framerate will change from 250-300 to 2-5 every few minutes, and it is very annoying. I only have about 5gb free on my 60gb 7200 rpm harddrive, however, as we speak, I am reformatting the laptop (posting from my desktop right now). I'm hoping to clear up some extra space and perhaps making this problem go away.

However, if this is a heat problem, it obviously won't help. On top of me being in Hawaii and it being summer, I haven't cleaned the inside since I got it in May of 2004, and I haven't applied any Arctic Silver. I guess if the problem persists I'll have to go out and buy some of that.

I've got exactly the same problem as you guys have, I am unsure if mine is related to heat as I have felt the laptop a lot hotter than what it gets now. But just to be sure I am downloading the mobile monitor software.

I'm also downloading the latest ATi drivers, I have the Omega drivers but just to be sure I will use the ATi ones, and I have a copy of drivecleaner that I will use before reinstalling.

The only thing that I can think of is that the fans have become blocked from picking up dust (My room tends to create lots of dust, its very strange).

If mobile monitor shows the same results as you guys, what do you think is the best solution, a laptop cooler or artci silver. Personally I don't want to take my laptop apart but if that is what I need to do then I will.
