Does not using the battery extend its life or shorten it....

If i am using my laptop at home, i obvously can plug it into the wall. Will doing this generally permit a longer lasting battery life before you need replacement?

On one hand, you are not "wearing" on the electron transfers that take place within, but on the other hands, keeping those little electrons in shape may be good for them!

Does it not even matter?

Drawing from AC is always preferrable.

A word of warning, if you do use the battery, full drains and charges are MUCH more damanging than shorter drains and charges

Using it sparingly seems to be the best way to keep battery power. Use it to 40% or so, and charge it back up... avoid a full discharge for sure.

Huh? I've always thought that it's best to use it until about 10-20%, and then charge it and that using it until only 50 or 60% is left will shorten the overall battery life...at least for Li-Ion. Yes? No?

If you keep the notebook plugged most of the time, you're battery will not last as long as if you use it, say, once or twice a month.

I heard that you should take out the battery when you know you will be on AC for a long time.

Ah, yes, that's a good idea too.

Any 'cycles' of the battery are bad in that they take away from the remaining 'cycles' which is as always a rough number. However using it down to 40% or whatever and recharging it isn't a full cycle. Li-ion batteries don't like the heat or the cold and don't like being stored at either full or empty charge (this more quickly reduces their capacity). The best charge to store a li-ion at is 40% but its probably not worth decharging it to that level just for its sake if you don't have to since that uses up one of your cycles.

Basically if you're on AC for a long while decharge the battery a little then take it out and store it in your desk drawer which shouldn't be too hot and will be out of the sunlight. Remember that li-ion batteries have a finite lifespan anyway (roughly 3 years from manufacture) till they will only hold 50% of their original charge regardless of how they are used.
