P35 Vid card upgrade

Hi, it's my first post here, and based on other posts I've read, everybody seems to know what they're talking about.

I just got a P35-S6111, and couldn't be happier. I've got the max 2GB of RAM, and it runs like a dream. I was talked out of getting the P35-S6291 because the place I was getting it from said it was discontinued, and so I got the S6111 instead. I read on a post here that the video card on the S6111, the Radeon Mobility 9000 IGP is considerably less powerful than the 9700 that comes with the S6291. I did a quick check on ebay, and found the 9700 on sale there for between 50 and 100 dollars, which is an acceptable price. I am a+ certified, and have no doubts about installing the card, but I'm wondering if it will fit. I assume the 6111 and the 6291 are more or less the same motherboard, as the specs are equal except for the vid card, but the spec sheet says that the 9700 that comes with the S6291 is 64 meg, and the ones I see on ebay are 128 meg, so I don't know if its a different card. If anybody knows whether or not the upgrade is possible, please let me know. Thanks.

don't know, but at $50 it's worth a try. It's not soldered in is it? Heat could be an issue particular with 128mb.

sorry, but the words IGP mean that there is no possible upgrades for you. the video card in the p35 series is an integral part of the mobo so unless your gong a mobo swap you are out of luck.

likely what you are seeing on ebay is a desktop card which will absolutely not fit inside your lappy, the p35 i believe did at one point come with a 128mb radeon but since they are not upgradeable odds are you wont be seeing one for it on ebay. being that its a desktop card it definately is different. the only agp graphics cards in laptops that can be repalced are in alienware and dell 9100/xps gen 1 laptops. toshiba never made an upgradeable gpu for their machines in the agp series.

Yeah, it was from a Dell 9100. Ah, well. I shouldn't have let the guy talk me into getting the 6111 when I really wanted the 6291. Thanx for the help, and the quickness with which the help came.

Fidget, I haven't opened up a P35, does Toshiba solder it on? It's an ATI Flexfit, so theoretically it can be removed and replaced...

edit: the 9700 would not work (not IGP), but you may be able to find a 9100 IGP, but you may run into BIOS issues, don;t know.

correct...even if you were able to somehow remove the ATI 9700, BIOS issues would kill any work done to that point.

would the bios really be that different between two cards from the same manufacturer and the same basic series?
simple version is yes it is.....

although the series is closely related, the bios are very different. it is sadly impossible to upgrade any of the graphics cards in the p35 series.

Ah, well. Next time I'll wait until I can get what I want. Glad I asked here before shelling out 100 bucks for something that I wouldn't be able to use. Still incredibly happy with the 6111.

I've got the 9000IGP in here and it runs like crap...

I can't run games on anything but low mode, and even then they're bad. I might be doing something wrong, but regardless, I'm taking this machine back for an HP.

depending on the HP you get you may not end up with anything better than what you already have....
