Welcome to the benefit of Linux - you get to learn what is happening on your machine. Each of those lines is something that the other OSs hide from you.

There are some legit reasons why RH might take longer to boot than your Windows machine...but there are some you should be concerned about, too. The fact that you're mentioning this now implies that it booted up faster before or are you just noticing it?

RH 9.1 actually removes those OK boxes and gives you a graphical boot - looks like like the other OSs. No thanks, I prefer the information.

[FWIW, there's _no_ comparison in the speed, especially at bootup, between XP/98 and RH on my machines. Especially XP, which takes an extra minute to stop pounding the hd after I "log in."]

RH9.0 always took a while to load. I just didnt complain about it because I felt it had something to do with my choice of installed packages - ALMOST an everything install

tweaking hdparm?? I dont have any idea what you're talking about

Are those games free?? the UT2K3 etc. ??

If I could get it to load faster it'll be great. Takes just a couple of seconds to load after I enter the password...

But the shutdown and Boot up times are ridiculous...

Starting this [OK]
Stopping this [OK]
Firewire [FAILED] (this tells me something )

very informative - maybe I just dont want all this just yet - purely as a Linux user and not developer. Im having fun using Linux - dunno if I wanna get started tweaking it and stuff...

Lesse...

Will get hold of some of those games - right now everything is working just the way I like - save for those boot times...

but anyway...Im sure there is something I can do about it and I will...

BTW : I prefer GNOME over KDE...something about KDE were a little Over the top IMO - Gnome was easier to use for me...

The number of things you load in RH won't usually have an effect on how long it takes to load. [Yes, there are exceptions.]

Remember, RH is also loading a lot _more_ than XP is, in a way. I don't say that as an excuse.

Scope the archives. laclasse has a nice outline. Otherwise:

O'Reilly Article about hdparm

Enemy Territory sure is (and it's great). enemy-territory.com

Two things:
1) Should something actually go wrong, that clue becomes very handy. Remember, more or less everything is logged in Linux, so you can go right to the bootup log and see exactly where/how something fails (and it's actually extremely helpful, not like bootlog.txt).
2) It's still interesting that it takes so long on your machine. To shut down, even. I wonder if you have some daemons that aren't necessary or are hanging. I'm curious - are you plugged into the Net when you boot?

Gnome can hang for a bit if it detects a network connection but it isn't working.

What does this mean??

By the way, notice how we specified the -m16 and -c3 switch again? That's because it doesn't remember your hdparm settings between reboots. Be sure to add the above line to your /etc/rc.d/* scripts once you're sure the system is stable (and preferably after your fsck runs; having an extensive fs check run with your controller in a flaky mode may be a good way to generate vast quantities of entropy, but it's no way to administer a system. At least not with a straight face...)
Its from the oreilly article...

How do I save the hdparm settings??

Thanks!!
if I remember correctly you can't. You add a line to your rc.local with hdparm and your preferred switches. As to boot time log in as root and fire up x then look for services manager or something similar. See what's running and what is a boot service for your preferred run level. Mine takes 2 minutes to boot but I haven't bothered setting up a wireless only profile for home usage.

I downloaded Enemy Territory for Linux and its a xxxx.run file - how do I run this file in Red Hat 9 ??

Ok figured this out myself...

Do this as root

# sh et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run

and then follow instructions

OMG there doesnt seem to be ANYONE else playing this game...no servers...nothing....

Am I doing something wrong as usual?? If not then its back to BF1942 for me

ha ha

ALso - the game runs in a sorta windowed mode towards one side of the screen...not full screen but not windowed mode either...its full screen without occupying the full screen...

screams at full detail level though...looks and plays pretty nicely...

YO GS

So, what program did you use to run your dvds? Mplayer, xmms, or xine? And if so, what are the dependency links?

I used M Player and they worked straightaway...I didnt load anything else...just went to their website and followed instructions from there...

Xine still doesnt work for me...but MPlayer is doing the job so what the heck!

MP3's are playing with XMMS and its great!! Only problem is the volume suddenly blasts up and hurts my ears when the song changes...dunno any way to normalize the sound output?? Its not too bad though...

I cannot believe I am living with this stuff after being pampered by Microsoft...I LOVE IT!!!

Doing a bit of Shell Programming for now...just getting to know my way around...groping in the dark...fantastic!!!

Um, you must be doing something wrong, as the servers are always packed. I've never seen less than two dozen or more. Really.

Um, that weird. What detail are you running it (resolution)?

do you think I have to install a patch or something? I enabled PB but every time I click refresh servers - NOTHING...

aah its good to hear that there are people playing...Im desperate to get this to work...
Yeah when I play it it is always packed - suspect you need a patch - I cannot remember the damn name of it but its the one that allows you to be booted if you are an ass. Without that patch I dont think you will see any of the servers - as for the screen running off to the side - thats just the video settings you need to sort out - run it full screen etc.

Its a sweet game - especially for free.
In your xconfig file you need to specify the proper resolution that the game runs at. ie 800x600 etc. list them from your normal screen res down. You don't dant want any virtual sreensizes. X doesn't have the ability to dynamicly change colors either (16bit or 24bit)

THANKS!! Man you guys RULE!!

I was trying to find out because I wanted to know which version of the Linux ATi driver to download. Right now I am updating my Kernel, BASH etc. everything using RHN. I thought it was a paid service but fortunately its free...just registered my system and started the up2date program...waiting for everything to fall into place.

Hopefully the update speeds up my load times...

You know why Linux rules??

I updated the KERNEL and BASH which are (I assume) the main components of Red Hat 9.0 !!

Yet - after it was done - no prompting for a Restart...no complaining...nothing...stable and silent!!!

I will restart and check my bootlog just to make sure everything was updated...

WOW!!

On reboot I see 2 Redhat9 's but each has a different kernel version. I clicked the newer one and it performed a FIRST BOOT again ??

Checked my email and I had two emails from Redhat - one for email confirmation and one letting me know that I will have to fill out a survey once every two months...BIG DEAL!! This service is free and I can do a survey every week if I have to

not sure how performance will have improved with the new kernel etc...

just checking with hdparm again
