What version did you update to?

Also, did you do a "make menuconfig"?

How do you find out the Kernel Version ??

It ends with a .20.9 I think...cant remember the stuff before that...

I keep getting this message every time I boot Linux...

Failed to load image xmms_mini.xpm

Details: file not found

XMMS still works normally but I wonder how I can remove this ... any suggestions ??

error

.xpm is a icon image file, you are missing the mini icon of xmms, or it is likely not in the right location, which is not a worry. Sounds like you discovering the power of linux. Nix is complex, yet transparent and incredibly flexible once you get around...
By the way, rebooting is overrated.

binary update

NS : that was a rhn binary update, which doesn't involve a kernel compile, therefore make menuconfig shouldn't be issued, nor any 'make' command.
Hope that helps.

Can you do that in drake? and whats the command for that cuz it takes too long for my box to boot also

I searched with google and found a file that matched that name...I have downloaded it and used that .xpm file as the icon for xmms...havent rebooted yet - I added that .xpm file in the icons directory...If it occurs at reboot I will add the .xpm file into the xmms directory just for the heck of it...I dunno where it is searching for that file so a little bit of trial and error I guess...

rebooting

gsferrari : I meant thta a properly coded Operating System shouldn't need any reboot to change any settings, apart when upgrading an essential piece such as the kernel.

On M$ rebooting fixes all, on linux it fixes nothing.

Yep, explains how my server was up for 4 months and I had upgraded every piece of software on there at least 2 times yet not needed a single restart.

Can I update my kernel in RedHat 9.0 ?? It is still an old kernel considering that 2.4.22 is out...I downloaded the new kernel and the acpi patch but I have no idea what to do with all this...

But all this in another thread

The clients we install with RH - some of whom have 50 or more users, running many multiple telnet sessions, at a time - can go months, or even years, without rebooting. If it weren't for power outages or problems with the phone companies, many of our clients would never reboot.

Of course, they have to reboot their PC-clients all the time.

CPU Thermal Sensor??

Ok as far as this acpi support is concerned - is there anything I have to do to enable acpi support in Redhat 9 ??

I want to be able to install temperature sensors like laclasse did and I want to read CPU, RAM, HDD etc. temperatures...

Is this possible in Redhat 9 ?? If YES - then what do I have to do to enable it??

Firstly you need ACPI support compiled into the Kernel and then you just browse around the files in the /proc/ folder.

...NS is right. If you get to that point, I then suggest grabbing gkrell and the ACPI module - it's great.

Slight tangent here but......

Chip: There was no "ACPI" folder in /lib/modules/2.6.test6/kernel/ or in any other folders near that tree location, as it is compiled into the kernel, not compiled as a module, but I have a feeling something is stopping ACPI from starting on boot. I will have a look in a minute.
