You should have just posted in the "Artifacting 8790" thread. I have a perfect WSXGA+ LCD (1680 x 1050) screen, perfect 3.4ghz proc, a slot load DL DVD burner, and a fried ATI card. My options now consist of using it with NO ATI drivers installed (defaults to Windows VGA Save driver), and I get a nice stretched 1024 X 768 display. No artifacts though. It really makes the nice screen look like crap.
Word of caution...DO NOT OC your video, stress test it, or let it get to hot. If you do, you'll find yourself a frequent visitor to the Artifacting 8790
thread. There's actually some good info that may help you ward off the inevitible. Keep in mind too that driving that extra resolution is going to heat up that card a bit too. Good luck.
