Review: Dreamer2go - Samsung X50 review

It's 2:21AM in Hong Kong (so English+grammar might suck), and it's school tmr for me...(yes, STILL)
Anyways, I bought my Samsung X50 on May 22nd with a price of HKD $16500. This is rougly...$2120USD...

The specs are as followed:
Intel Pentium M 1.73 ghz (2MB L2 cache, Intel 915PM chipset)
1GB DDRII 400MHz RAM
60GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
15.4" WXGA High Bright Screen
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 128 MB graphics
DVD+-Rewritable Driver

What makes this laptop special is that most of the parts were made from Samsung. So, the whole laptop shell is pretty unique, and for a "thin and light" laptop, with desktop replacement features, it is super light. With batteries, it weighs 5.28lbs, or 2.4kg. Don't forget, it's a 15.4 Widescreen 1280 X 800 resolution screen.
It also uses Samsung's superbright screen, much like Sony's Xbrite. (Even Sony's Japanese PSP version uses Samsung's LCD) So the brightness is great. If it is too bright for you, you can always adjust it with the full sized keyboard...

Speaking of the keyboard, it is very nice. I have a medium sized hands, but yet, the keyboard is so comfortable to use, it fits everyone's hands. So for people with big hands, don't worry, it fights you perfectly. It's also a full sized keyboard, with the "Fn" key that acts like a "shift" key...
How to explain it? (Brain dead :P) When you hold shift, and hit a key, that letter will be uppercased. The FN key has a similar concept, so if you want to increase the speakers volume, you just hold the FN key, and hit the keyboard that increases the volume.

Yeah, with that said, a little downside is that it doesn't have it's OWN volume control key, instead it uses the "FN" key...well you'll get use to it.

The touchpad is great. You can have an option to add a finger print security between the left and right click button below the touchpad. (Of course, you need to add more money), but if not, you'll have the touchpad lock.

Speakers are located at the FRONT of the laptop, left and right of the touchpad, and the speaker quality is pretty good. Of course, you can have insert your favorite headphone to the headphone jack located INFRONT of the laptop. It also includes a microphone jack, located right next to the headphone jack.

I only managed to play WoW, but I changed all my settings to max, and widescreen mode...honestly speaking, the Mobility X600 is SLIGHTLY better than my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro...my eyes just can't 100% tell, but I can feel that X600 is a bit SMOOTHER...(only 3Dmarks can tell)

The wireless connectivity is very good! I successfully stole someone's router point somewhere in my apartment with a connectivity signal of 3 out of 5. (5 being max) So the network card with this laptop is excellent...

This laptop comes with it's OWN OS. Sorta...
Samsung is kind enough to add a feature called AV NOW. This feature is enabled when Windows is in shut down mode. Next to the power button, theres a button called AV NOW, and you hit it, and the computer turns on and the AV NOW softwares comes up. What it does is that it can play music (CD), photos, and plays DVDs WITHOUT booting Windows...wow what a great feature!!!
Although I didn't test the photo and DVD section myself, the music on the go was fantastic....no need to boot windows.
Of course, theres an option where you can exit the AV NOW, and launch Windows afterwards...

Features I have yet to figure out:
How good X600 is with Half Life 2 and Counter Strike Source
The battery life...although it should be around 5.5 - 6 hours...
DDRII Ram's power..

yeah, anything I've missed it's not my fault...I really need to go to bed...:P

I highly recommend this laptop if you're an on the go person because of it's lightweight and long battery life, but also demands power.

see yaz.

nice review.. from your description, this thing seems pretty/slim/sexy
mobility x600 should be more than enough for a WXGA..

post some pics if you have time

Is there anyway on earth that I can get the top model of this line for ~$3000 in US ( I am dying for it. Thanks for your review, dreamer2go. I hope you can get some pix up (try to compare the width with something else, because we can tell much more about it.)

Thanks for your review once again

Yes, please post some pics too! I want to buy an X50!!! They look sooo cool! Just over $2000 is very cheap... it's $1000 more in Europe.

Could you post some benchmarks too? I want to see how the X600 preforms.

I am trying to convince one HKese guy to have it for sale on ebay. He usually do electronics in ebay. Seeing this product might create a huge hit, I am recommend him to retail on ebay. Hell yeah, it's worth a shot. If he has it up, thank me

For once a laptop that is cheaper in other places than the US.

Luckily for me I have friends in HK, Japan and Korea, so this laptop might be a viable option for me.

Samsung is Korean, isn't it? I wonder how much it would cost there.

I'm just wondering, does Samsung adds the option to replace the optical drive and insert an extended battery in there?
I doubt that. Samsung is new in computer division and I dont think their DVD are detachable (since they build their own case, perfect fit, optimized for weight)

Considering that laptop can have two graphics card options, ATI Mobility Radeon X700 128MB / X600 64MB, it may indeed be upgradable, but who knows.

Also, the weight of 2.41kg is with the 3-cell battery, and the manufac. site states that its battery life "max/ up to 4.5hour ( Battery mark 4.01) varies based on hardware and software usage". So, the lighter 3-cell battery wouldn't have as much battery life compared to the 6-cell one (which would be the max/ip to 4.5 hours).

Still, it looks like it may be a good laptop, but it's fairly expensive:
http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/86..._86__512MB.asp

$3269 in Australia.

Forgot to add, it only comes with 3 USB ports too. *sob*

[edit]It seems some Aus websites say the X700 128, and others the X600. I am going to go with the assumption that it is the X600.

[edit2]This preview states that "For powering the display, users will have a choice of either an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 or X600 graphics cards, offering 128 MB and 64 MB of video RAM, respectively." Lets hope this is true. If so, this may be my future laptop (with the X700 128mb card, of course).

Thanks for the review dreamer2go!, sounds like you are very happy with your new laptop

Here in the uk the X50 isn't available with the bright screen and you don't have a choice of GPU (X600 only), but it still looks like an awesome piece of kit. I would be interested to hear if you find the X50 too hot or noisy when performing CPU intensive tasks though.

I don't think it actually comes with the X700. All the sites that mention it say that it comes with an X700 128 or the X600 64, and yet I've seen the laptop speced with the X600 128? I am assuming that it was just a bit of miscommunication that led to people thinking the 128mb video card was going to be the X700.

Hey guys
as promised, here are the pictures.
But before I post the pictures, I realized that if you use FULL bright screen mode, the battery life is around 3.5 hours. If you play games it's around 3 hours (with WIFI enabled)
if the screen is in low bright mode, it's around 5-6 hours....

Also, the fan is a BIT noisy when you're playing games, it's pretty hot as well, but not like...boiling hot. I can't really hear the fan noise with my aircon on, so it's fine... (Tested with CS:S)

This laptop comes with 3 USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire, external monitor output...(also I read the manual it says it can watch TV with the S Video thing. I don't live in the US, so am not 100% sure what HDTV is, I mean I know what it stands for, but never seen the actual quality and I don't know it works...)
It also comes with an intergrated SD card and Memory Stick (compatible with PRO) slot....nice for Sony fans

Here are the pics!

The laptop...15.4 widescreen

The screen

The stickers...

So light!

So thin

=D there ya go

Hey Guys Ive got the Acer 8104 and thinking of ditching it for the Samsung X50 M760. Im still in my trial period and can return my Acer. Any of you guys compared it to the 8104. The samsung is more expensive here in UK so Im windering what im gonna get over and above the Acer apart from the slightly slim dimensions. Your thoughts please so I can send the Acer back.
Another thought how does the ATI x700 differ from the x600 in the samsung.
also have the travelmate 8104 and am thinking about switching to the x50.. mostly because some small problems i've already experienced with the acer during the last month.
a big problem for me is the noise factor. the acer is pretty silent - but not silent enough. so i am wondering:
i've heard in some samsung forums that the hd can be quite noise - is that true for the x50? (when the fan is off and the room silent - do u hear the hd without holding ur ear to the notebook?)
how often is the fan on when u are doing office stuff?
how well does the silent mode work?

.. alot of questions... but worth asking befor u spend 3400 euro (yes ... 3400 euro here in austria!) on a notebook...

oh. and as far as i know - the x600 is nearly only half as fast as the x700... so - there will be a considerable difference.

one more thing: how does the surface feel? is it likly to scratch easy (like the acer...) or is it more "apple-like"?
I still have no idea if it actually comes with the X700 or not.
Hey guys,
How many of you guys are interested in buying this laptop???

I am trying to convince a friend of mine in HK to have it on ebay for sale. He is finding the quote for me right now. However, I try to collect a good number of interested customers. I can show him this thread. However, Dreamer2go, can you tell us the price of the top of the line X50 in HK?

If he has it on ebay and ship to Aus or US, we can have it cheaper than 3400 euro (in your case, generous one) or $3700 (for me) because we dont have to pay for duty most of the time.

I cant wait to have a hand of that laptop!!!!!!! argghhhhh

If you are interested, please post it here. Then, he has more incentive to resale it on ebay.

I am so excited, hope you can understand my post. Arrrgggg X50 ^^
post #20 of 162
I may be; it all depends on the price. I have friends in HK, so I can always get one later.

I always want to know if it comes with the X700 or not.
