Review: Dreamer2go - Samsung X50 review - Page 5

Hi Gernot,

1st I must admit that the 8104 seems faster than the x50. But not a huge differnce. The difference is noticebale but not enough to be a concern. Certianly I think both will tackle pretty much most day to day stuff swiftly. Im not really that techy to do sophisticated tests.

2 Ref the hard disk on both lappies they are both quiet. I really cant say that I hear the samsung hard drive. I have had some laptops over the years such as Toshibas and compaqs and Texas and Gateway and must admit those hard drives were noisy but they didnt seem noisy in those days. I currently have a 3 yr old compaq presario and I thought that was quiet but I can hear the hard disk on that when I compare to these machines. Anyway hard disk no problems. Both are quiet.

3 The samsung overall is much quieter in fact its very quiet. I really cant tell if the fan is on or not because it just is that quiet. When the 8104 fan kicks in it really shows how noisy the 8104 is. Any sound omited from the x50 is much smoother. I work in an office and most of the time im the only person in and and sometimes the overall sounds around me are very silent and I dont want to hear a fan all the time and at the same time i dont want to unplug the AC on the 8104 to to shut it up. So as far as sound goes the x50 wins. But i will be able to tell you more after a few days usage.

The build on the samsung seems stronger even though the build on the Acer is good. In my opinion though I think the Acer does look nicer with the gunmetal effect and folio design.

ALot of people have been saying how good the screen on the samsung is. Honestly no differnence. Its only slighlty brighter. Here in the UK they come with the matt finish I suppose if it was the glossy screen it would show a large differnce.

Other big differences apart from the noise is that the x50 has a much more solid chassis. When you lift both machines from the front palmrest then I can hear some movement noise from the 8104 but the x50 seems very solid. I think a lot of this has todo with weight because the x50 has less weight to support on its chassis when you lift it from the front.

The key board feels better on the x50. I made a lot of typing errors on the 8104 because of its shape and key sizes whereas the x50's key's feel more solid and nice feed back. I must admit that the 8104 keyboard is still good but x50's is better for me.

Only quality issue is that the CD tray seems very weak and fragile on the x50.

Im still undecided>>>>.......???? I would keep the 8104 if I worked in a office with some noises and if I played heavy games. I do like the Samsung but i just wish it came in a darker silvery colour rather than this cheapy silver colour.

The jury Is still out but Ive got to make a decision soon and stop messing about and just get on with things.

I think I will ring Samsung customer care just to throw some awkward questions at them to see how helpful they are ( I hope they speak English). Ive found a mixed bunch at Acer some polite and some rude. I think thats what it will boil down to ultimatley.

Another point the x50 is slighlty warmer on the bottoem left. Not uncomfortable but you wouldnt want to keep it on your lap for too long in the summer months.

Any more questions just ask.

It is hard to say what customs will charge.

It looks overly complicated if the item is valued over $2,000 US, though. Here is a us gov't document which mentions some things:
http://www.cbp.gov/ImageCache/cgov/c...tionalmail.doc

And here is an excerpt:
Quote:
Goods worth more than $2,000
Shipments exceeding $2,000 in value require a formal entry in order to release the merchandise. Filing a formal entry can get rather involved; most travelers are unfamiliar with the paperwork and other requirements and so hire an agent, generally a customs broker, to do it for them. If formal entry is required on a parcel, the parcel is held at the Customs International Mail Branch and notice is sent to the addressee of the package’s arrival. The addressee can then go to the nearest Customs office to file the formal entry on the package. Once the Mail Branch has been notified that entry has been filed, the package will be released to the Postal Service and forwarded to its final destination. Please consult the U.S. Customs brochure U.S. Import Requirements for further information on filing formal entries.

thanks for the quick and detailed replay oh generous one

my main problem with the acer is:
after a month of usage i started getting problems with the lcd. it seems like a connection problem - some times the picture would dissapeare or there would be weird "effects" going on. then the notebook started not to start up when i pushed the start up button. i have to unplugg and take out the battery, put it back in and plug in again to get it to start. dvd's won't play with the dilivered powerdvd. only black screen and sound..
i am just not convinced by the whole build quality and i don't want constant problems.
i am willing to sacrifice a little power for reliabilty - but not too much. since u seem to be using the notebook mainly for office work - how do u notice a decrease in "power"?

and could u compare the loudness factor for me? since the 8104 has such a quiet sound output (even on the headphones) that i couldn't wacht a movie on the train, even with earplugs, because i didn't understand everything clearly. it's just so quiet. and when i was tweaking around on the equalizer the sound got louder, but also very distorted...

and regarding the cd-tray: is it as "turbin-like" as the acer one when it starts a cd/dvd? is it fragile enough to worry?

thanks in advance
and greetings from austria

Gernot Ive heard a lot of people complain about the Acers on this forum. I must admit though that it seems your was built on a friday afternoon. I havent got similar problems with the Acer although alot of people complain about faults and bad customer services etc. I think thats just becasue they sell so many PCs that a percentage will always have problems. You wont notice the differnce in performance trust me especially if its for office work. Regarding the CD tray maybe its just the way most are. I tried a Sony Vaio FS before the Acer and that had a bad tray but good overall build. I wouldnt worry too much about the CD tray.

I can say that a couple of design flaws exist with the x50 thaty ive noticed after a few hours and that is that it gets very hot for the lap and I have had to end up using a magazine underneath. I suppose that is the price you pay for a lighter fan maybe. Also if the screen is tilted too far back then the x50 feels as if it will rollback and agin that due to its weight.

I would say to you to buy it and try it. Im sure if you can get these in Austria but make sure you can send it back if you dont like it. I am still undecided. By the way I played a CD movie for about 5 minutes on each and did notice the screen differnce but its not a big differnce.

Gernot , The sound i forgot about. Its better than the 8104 and has a got more BASS but it still isnt that much louder.

A suggestion for you: have you looked at the Toshiba Qosimo. They also do a 15 inch glossy with Harmon Kardon sound. Its a new smaller model to the 17 inch qosimo. I personally think its not stylish enough and maybe a bit big. But hey you cant have everyting. I think like me you like things to be perfect and you wont stop until you find it. I think you will like the x50 but its not perfect.

... the hunt for the perfect laptop continues...
i guess u are right generous one, the perfect laptop does not exist. i like the qosimo very much - but it is simply too heavy to cary around. my problem is that i want high performance and portability in one notebook. i will send the acer in for repair and if they are nice an fast and replace it maybe as a whole i'll keep it and give the company one more chance to win my trust
if they fail to convince me with their service i'll try the samsung and hope for the best.
u say u tried the sony fs before - what was the problem with that?

cheers
gernot

Vaio FS was good for the money but then I read about the 8104 and decided it would last me a few years with the performance etc.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the nice review of the X50, I think it is a very good laptop indeed. Aside from the small flaws, you have to admit that 4hours+ for 6 cell batter is unbelievable. My dell has 1 6 cell modular battery (48KWh) and one main battery 9 cell. I can only last up to 5 hours max !!!

Anyway, I think I wont be able to get the X50 due to the duty. Should I take my risk to ship one laptop from UK and claim it as open box used laptop, value ~ $700??? I can have my friend open the original box and pack in a smaller box or something. Please give me some advice.

If you think it's too risky, I would probably look for another laptop then
I looked at the LG LM70, not much review nor preview about it. I don't think it's a good product though (aside from its lusting specs)

Can you recommend me some laptop series??? I am looking for something that has:
15.4" WSXGA+ or 13.3" WXGA (widescreen)
Decent graphic card (X300 - X600 or even 6200 Go)
Nice battery life (4 hours or more)
Very nice build, solid.

Money is not the object now. It's funny how my uncle tells me: "even if money is no object, you can only find one laptop that you want (the X50)? There is something wrong with you then!!!" Geez!

ps: I even contacted with Dynamism, they dont accept paypal as an order for laptop. I know it is a limit for me in payment method, but I cannot figure out any other way. All the guys I contacted on ebay didnt even response to me anymore

The only issue with declaring it as a lower value (that I can see) is that you insure it for that value. If it gets lost, you only get the amount you insured it for.
Actually, I shipped some package to other countries before (australia and norway are the recent two). The declared value is different than the amount of insurance you are willing to pay. In another word, if you are willing to pay the carrier (FedEx) more for insurance, you are welcome to do so.

The only think that I am afraid of is that: what if the customs office doesnt buy that the new X50 valued 700 bucks...

I am looking for alternative laptops now... nothing as good so far...
Would the customs officers know the value of the laptop? Would they be able to tell if it is new or old? How are they going to know the specs when they can't use your stuff?

The best thing you could do is to ship it in a totally different generic box, etc.

Guys Im keeping the x50. This morning I turned on the 8104 and reluctnalty connected to the mains and the only thing Ive done is log on to the forum and guess what the fan has kicked in full blast. I certainly notice how loud it is after using the x50 for a few hours. Also at first I thought the x50 silver colour was too bright but when i keep looking it seems much fresher than the 8104. Above after comparisons the screen is better on the x50 and its much better built and its lighter but then its slighlty more expensive but I think woth it. Im keeping it.

I would too. Want to buy me one? ^^

Update on the Battery test

Ok...5 hours of battery life is the max...I'm not sure if you can extend it to 6...didn't test that...

Okok:
Max Performance, Wireless LAN ON, WoW game on, max settings...(everything on High graphics mode), and AA is on 2X...
Battery life: 2 hours-2 hours 30 minutes...

Screen on max brightness + Wireless LAN on, no games, just regular internet surfing:
Battery life: 3 hours

Screen on Medium and low + Wireless LAN on, just regular internet surfing:
Battery life: 3 hours and 30 minutes

Screen on low, Wireless LAN off, just normal homework tasks, like Word and Powerpoint
Battery life: 5 hours

Screen on low to mid, Wireless LAN OFF, music with Windows Media Player (MP3 files)
Battery life: 4 - 4.5 hours

Haven't test DVD yet...
Note:
These are only ROUGH testings...I didn't use up all my batteries. Why? Because it is bad for the battery itself.
A note to remember, NEVER USE UP ALL YOUR BATTERY, and charge it up again...leave like...10%-30%, and charge it up...
If you use up all your battery life, and then charge it, it is bad, and will shorten the battery life itself, meaning, you have to buy a new battery...

Hope this helps if you have any questions about the battery life...

ALSO
X700 Mobility and X600 Mobility question.
Some says it's 700, some 600. It is suppose to be 600, BUT YOU CAN UPGRADE IT TO 700 later...
it's an expandable video card option....of course, I recommend sending it back to Samsung to do it...don't do it yourself =) just to be careful!!

See yaz

popophobia:
My model is NPX-50
this means that I don't have a model specifications..(HK doesn't have it)

However, you can upgrade RAM, HD, processor speed, and video card in SAMSUNG official store in Hong Kong, of course, with a price...

This model is set as it is...(the HK X50 specs is included in my signature)
You mean store as in physical store? If not, can you link me to the Samsung HK upgrade site?

If I could get it with all the options and the X700 128, I will def. save up and buy it.

Seeing as though you can change the options, can you buy it without any HDD, CPU, etc? That would save a lot of money. You could say you damaged the outside of your laptop (i.e. smashed the screen), and you just want to buy the barebone system.
Your laptop is the one with the 6 cell battery, Dreamer?

There's a 9 cell available, isn't there?
to dreamer2go: good to know. So they have lots of options in HK eh? I dont know why my contact in HK havent replied me yet

to nanaki: do you want to open up the samsung? Since it is customized by samsung, which mean everything is kinda neat already, and it is very difficult to take a part ( as I believe)
6 cell doesnt stick out, 9 cell does stick out from the back
post #99 of 162
Dreamer to go ref the battery. I have always been told that its best to fully discharge a battery before recharging it. So is this a new battery procedure on laptops or has it always been like this. Oh and why is it better to recharge at 10-20% of battery level.
I would open it up and put in all the parts myself, if it meant I could save a lot of money. I am sure many tech. minded people would do the same.
