Please post your luck with your wireless router

Thread Starter
I'm currently on my second router due to problematic wireless drops with my first one. My first router was a Netgear that was incompatible with my router. My current router (D-link) loses connection frequently and has to be reset every time I use it. I'm not sure if it's due to inactivity or what but I have altered as many settings as possible including the firewall settings. I've scoured every networking forum I could find but have given up on this one. I'm considering a new one and need some good leads.

Please post your router and your success stories.

Thanks

Linksys WAP-54G v2.0
Great range, no dropouts. Maximum security too (non-RADIUS).

Thanks I was considering Linksys any way because my administrator recommends them highly.

I have a netgear and its been really behaving badly. Dropping my connection and jumping to silly slow speeds (2 mbps )

I had a few APs around me operating on the same channel as I was, changed the channel my AP was using and so far so good.

Worth a try if you havent already tried, and check to see if theres a new firmware for your AP.

Linksys WAG54G, no significant problems

Ive used a Billion 7500g for the last 8 months. Its been down less than 5 minutes the entire time, no dropouts, spotless streaming audio to Airport, with a shared internet connection between three users.

Highly recommended.

<begin rant> And mate, that ****ing sgnature sucks. Nothing like forcing me download a craptacular graphic with your system specs in it - for every single reply you make. People come here to get advice and share experiences, not look at shitty, useless photoshop art. <end rant>

Hi, d-link dsl-g604t, works perfectly with the latest firmware, stable connection and excellent range. Have you tried this forum http://www.expansys.com/forum.asp?man=D-LIN&code=110551

Wow...sorry that it takes another millisecond to download this page must be excruciating. I didn't know this was a rant thread either. This is an Acer thread hence the sig...if you don't like it don't post. This sig was made to demonstrate the spectacular artwork of doom so sorry it didn't appeal to you perhaps it's time to upgrade that Tandy so you can get respectable download times and quit busting my balls about a sig.

It's not about download times but about space on screen that your sig occupies - scrolling through it sucks. In general, your sig should occupy no more space than the post (part without sig) itself. It's understood that some posts are very short, hence "in general." It's time for you to downgrade your sig. Just scale it down, it'll still look good.

Ahh, I gotta stay on topic too. Using D-Link DI-624, works really well, except that World of Warcraft tends to make it stuck after awhile in wireless g mode (this behavior is only with WoW, router reboot fixes things).
Experience with D-Link DWL-2100AP access point is mostly negative though.

It's not the vendor that matters but a particular model.

I use a D-Link DI-624C3 and no real problems. For D-Link issues, check out this forum:

I've been to that forum before but It didn't help me. I've downloaded and installed the latest firmware and messed with router settings for like 6 straight hours but it happens regardless of settings.

Nope im still getting problems aswell with my netgear WG602 v2.

Argh its driving me insane, im only in the next room and im getting total dropouts and speeds that jump from 54/mbs down to of 2mb/s. Sometimes the signal strength bar is full yet my link is only 1/mbs lol. Its making online game playing not possible. This is crazy. Never had these problems with my PDA, but my PDA only had a wifi b card inside.

I've checked the antenna, updated firmware, tried placing the access point on different channels, hard rest the access point many times aswell... with no luck.

Im about to throw this access point in the bin.

Yeah I agree, wireless to me needsa a few years to mature. It's been nothing but a headache

Does anyone with SBC DSL service use a speedstream 5100 modem? I'd like to change my modem to see if it may be the root of the problem but would like to see if any one else is using it. I'm gonna post this question in notebook general too.

I do, with D-Link DI-624 behind it. Works fine. Albeit SpeadStream modem became noisy lately. I tried to put Netopia router with Wi-Fi b option instead of this combo. But then b is kinda too low speed when you connect two computers wirelessly and start moving files between them. Putting D-Link behind Netopia did not work out since DI-624 does not work in Access Point mode, and having two routers between you and i-net is surely too complex for home setup. Using D-Link DWL-2100AP behind Netopia is not an option, the AP is buggy.

I hear there is a nice router sold by SBC that has g wireless mode builtin. I might consider that.

Netgear wg602

Hi i use this wireless access point and i think that the trouble lies with the intel wireless chipset and the centrino, what is your set-up as i have another laptop using the netgear 54m pcmcia card and apart from using the latest drivers/utilities (the card states to disable windows taking control of the card) is stable as a rock never losing connectivity and never below 54m. The wifi built into my 1693wlmi is very flaky sometimes losing connectivity , slow speeds and although i can see my server and the files i sometimes lose the file transfers and the pc locks up, the other laptop with the external card never a problem.

I have a DI-784 and I'm starting to consider heat as a problem. I felt the underside of the router and it gets unusually hot! I read a few post on the broadband forum that mentioned heat as a suspect for failure. I'm gonna rethink my next router installation and possibly make a custom fan setup for it. This time I think I'm going to try Netgear.. they have a pretty good deal going on NewEgg.

I agree with you that its a problem with the internal intel wireless card. Ive never had problems with my AP before until I got this laptop with the intel based wifi card inside.

So you think the best way to connect to the access point is to use Intels software instead of the default windows one? Its intresting as on intels site it says its best to stick with what ever your laptop provider has placed by default. But it really can't hurt... I'll try disabling the windows wifi manager and using intels tomorrow and will report back

This is getting to be quite irritating i must say, its making the point of owning a laptop quite pointless for me.
