Shipping to Canada

OK, I have an urgent question.

Has anyone had an Alienware laptop delivered to them in Canada and if so, did you have to pay any taxes and how much were they?
When I go to the Alienware website and check out, then go to estimate taxes and shipping, it says taxes. But is this just the sales tax? Does it mean when you get your laptop delivered to Canada, you have to pay additional taxes on top of the $400 or so that appears on Alienware's website?

Thanks,
marble

You will definately not pay US sales tax on a rig shipped to Canada so call them and ask what the procedure is to pay the tax in Canada....I am thinking it would be held by the shipper until you paid the tax to them, thus going to the Canadian govt but I am not sure...meaning if Fed Ex deliveres the rig, you pay appropiate tax upon delivery but I am not sure and there are a few Canadians here so maybe one will see this thread and help you out or call AW

Shipping to Canada

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. On the Alienware website, it says Shipping & Handling is $168.30 to Canada and Tax is $430.82. What is this tax for exactly?

If there are any Canadians out there, please let me know. I need an answer very soon. If you had an Alienware laptop delivered to you from the US, please tell me if you had to pay any extra? I believe they Fed ex the box.

Thanks,
marble

I think the 400.00 dollars in taxes is the ensure the handling of the item. Or the expensive machine taxes....considering each machine is like 3k plus. They are just making you pay for the all the taxes on such machine due to all of the high end machinery in your system
post #5 of 23
all of that goes to gst land, plus if you have a pst in your province your gonna get stuck paying that too....thankfully there is no duty on them but the taxes are not pleasant at all.

just in case they decided to maek things difficult i would have about enough to cover the taxes possible i.e. gst & pst in case they decide to make it really cost you. and if you dont have to use that extra money well then you have a nice gaming fund for later or some accessory money.

Shipping to Canada

Thanks for your feedback.
I'll be in the Vancouver area for a vacation. The taxes sound like they could really dig a hole in my funds. I guess if the total price is going to come to something like $4400, the taxes are not going to be pretty. I'm not sure if Vancouver has PST?

yeah they have PST....its a pretty hard tax, i think once you combine that with GST you are prettymuch equal to what the VAT is in the UK...it sucks for those in provinces with PST, thankfully mine is not one of them.

(p.s. if yo have time try to get to banff or jasper just over the provincial boarder in alberta, they are very beautiful this time of year. oh and of course there is also no PST in alberta...)
Damn Maxist countries and their taxes . . .wait, the US's taxes suck as well, tho not as bad as socialist UK and Canada.
red_marble, something else to remember is that alienware will not cover your shipping to and from their depot if you ever encounter a problem. it might be a good idea to save some money and not go with the extended warrenty. i ended up paying about 230cnd extra to have my laptop shipped to alberta. if you're ordering a tower i'm sure that you'll be paying more. that 400 sounds about right. your best choice might be to ask a kind-hearted albertan to recieve your tower and ship it to you, thus saving the pst charges...those extra taxes really suck.

it doublely sucks if you are in BC where the PST is one of the highest in canada... thank god im in alberta and we have enough oil under our feet that we dont need a PST, especially one as brutal as BC has. i think that something like woshishangdi suggested may be better for you if you are going to do things that way. it would save you some serious taxes. and it is important to remember what he said about your warranty, they realyl dont cover the shipping to depot when you are in canada, so that could be a rather expensive trip if it ever needs to happen. however the extended warranty is useful for something since AW support only really is there when you have warranty, so even if you cant get the help than it is not so good for you. so i would keep the extended warranty and just figure out shipping/taxes from there.

anyways best of luck with your machine and btw what lappy are you getting?
There are no special duties on computers in Canada...that $400 should just be the GST and PST. However, if you are just visiting (not a resident of Canada), then you can apply to have your taxes refunded, provided the goods are taken out of Canada within 60 days.

this is very true, just like the VAT refunds for those of us who travel to europe....just watch out for the ccra they are slow as hell with everything, and if you get someone who is having a bad day well...good luck cause your gonna need it.

the other suggestion is pretty good, and i am sure you would be able to get it sent to you from somewhere that there was no PST (like alberta). even if having it sent over from alberta to you was the answer and it cost you say $100 to do it i think the price would be good compared to what PST in BC would hot you for. as for the other more official way, that could be made to work too, you just have to concider that you might still have to pay some in fees to the gov in order to get it back, and the money still comes out of your pocket in the first place.

no matter how you do it, just enjoy the new lappy and if i or any of us can help you more i am sure we will just get in touch.

Thanks a lot guys,

This really helps. And for the link to getting a tax rebate, I will definately look at that, that will be really helpful. Though I don't know how long it would take to get the rebate? Anyone know?

Ok, I just got a reply from Alienware and they say that the tax on their website is 'duty tax' and 'I wouldn't have to pay additionally'. So I'm thinking do they charge the duty tax already and just add it to the cost of the system so it's like prepaid or something? Still would have to pay the GST and PST though in Canada.

Here is the spec I'm interested in:

Alienware MJ12m 7700
3.4Ghz (Is there any major difference between the 3.4 and 3.6, they appear to be slightly different processors?)
17" WideSXGA+ 1680 x 1050 LCD Display with Built-in Camera - Xeno Grey
Intel Pentium 4 550 Desktop Processor w/ HT Technology 3.4GHz
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 4 x 512MB (though I'm considering whether I can get away with 1 GB ram for games and 3D stuff and save money)
Alienware MJ12m 7700 NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go with 256MB of DDR3 memory (had thought about the Quadro FX but I want to play games well too)
RAID 0 120GB (60GB x 2) 7200 RPM ATA100 - Hitachi
24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD Combo w/Software MPEG2 Decoder
8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software
Internal Wireless 802.11b/g miniPCI Card
3 year warranty

I have to make a decision soon though as their rebate offer runs out Thursday. I'm still waiting though for them to tell me if I'm eligible for the rebate as I'm not a US resident.

BTW what is the screen like? Does it meet all expectations, too reflective, what are ur thoughts?

cheers,
marble

sweet config, your gonna have loads of power with that system, i think the screens are great especially the high res one you are looking at, its one of the best screens i have ever seen. there is no duty tax on laptops for canada, so my bet is that they are charging you the GST and letting fedex collect the PST on delivery. personally i would make sure i had enough to cover both ready and waiting just in case they want to both gst and pst on delivery, but i highly doubt it will be both because of the duty thing. as for a rebate from the canadian government, you can only get ti when you leave the country, and with them you can never tell how long it will take. sometimes it takes just a short (hour or less) while some times its very long, almost enough that it should ahve its own phases just like AW. simply put i would expect anything between on the spot and several months for the rebate to come from the canadian government, and when it does expect to still pay some fees for liberating your money.

Governments just love to steal your hard-earned money. Who else will pay to take care of the the lazy mother f'rs on the planet?

Shipping to Canada

Ok, Alienware have told me that I will not be charged additionally when the system arrives in Canada. The taxes includes the GST and PST tax fees. Apparently this has been set up with FedEx so they deliver to my address and I don't pay additionally to receive the system. Plus I can get the mail in rebate too, which incidentally if I couldn't get probably wouldn't be able to afford the rig anyway..

Thanks,

Y'know I forgot to ask whether the MJ 12m 7700 comes with the Clear View display (before I ordered..) or is that only for the Area 51m. Does anyone know?

BTW, Fidget don't know anything about Canada except it's got nice scenery (this will be my first trip. (I've mainly been to the US a lot). Staying in Vancouver area, but where's good places to see the big country? I like the outdoors. What are the big places to see in BC?

cheers,
marble
well...BC has some great scenery, there are the rocky mountains which are spectacular, and offer all sorts of things to do, hiking, canoeing, rafting, rock climbing...like i said alot. those are what makes up most of BC. As for sights it is a huge coutry, staying in BC only you will not see everything canada has to offer. with a bit more in terms of detail i can give you some good places to see, but i would really need to know if you are going to have any sort of transport, like a car or not, cause that will definately effect what i can suggest you see. as well the length of your stay is someting that would definately effect what i suggest because the longer your here the more you can see....

anyways, just a few details and i should be able to give you some help in deciding where to go. but a good bet is to check out some of the national or provincial parks. as well as vancouver island if you get a chance. the parks offer alot of activities, climbing, whitewater rafting, hiking, camping, canoeing, really they are a great place to do the outdoors. the places to see really depend on how far yo are able or willing to travel in order to see the sights....

Well I'll be staying for 3 long weeks with my partner, will have a use of a car and will also be getting down to Seattle too for a couple of days. Yeah, I like BIG national parks, anything like Yosemite in California and I'm up for it. So what's Alberta like?
