p4 vs pM vs A64

I used to have a Dell 8200, p4 1.7 with a M9 64mb and 1gig ram...opportunity knocked and I sold it so I am back in the market for a laptop. Ive gone through quite a few desktops and after having the laptop, im so attached to the mobility.

Main use is GAMING but at the same time somehting I can move about with, take to class, school work, travel surf the net on the can etc. With the coming of mass upgradability im torn between potential chipsets and what would offer the best future-proof solution.

I mean there are 3 options really p4(800fsb), recently athlon64 and lesser extent pentiumM.

How far is the p4 going to scale before prescott takes over (which would I assumed gets its own chipset). Ive heard prescott in notebooks as early as feb next year? If I was going to get a 2.8ghz now say this time next yr will i be able to go up to 4ghz do you think?

Athlon64 is another option new from Voodoo, it supposedly gives extreme performance, runs easy on the battery and has the 64-bit to boot. But how long do you think it will be before 64bit is necessary? 1yr? 2yrs? i mean my last laptop lasted a year... assuming i keep this for two...would having the 64bit option be a true investment? Also, it is brand new...and i have a fear of gremlines and bugs roaming around especially with such a high priced item where it isnt so simple as a quick MB swap.

And to a lesser extent pM, moving to the dothan soon and voodoo mating the pM to the M10p should be quite fierce. Would a current pM chipset be compatable with the dothan? or will it get a fsb boost or new chipset?

This is kind of a hard thing to speculate witht he way tech moves but with such a huge amount of money moving around im trying to maximize my investment and looking at possible resale value down the road. oh, and money is an object...i dont want to go nutty but say around $3250usd...obviously cheaper the better but thats my absolute ceiling....

heh the essay is over, anyones thoughts, inputs and opinions are GREATLY appreciated.

oh and Hi all! quite a first post LoL!

If you answer the following three questions, I may be able to help you:

1. How long (minimum) do you want to be able to run the laptop on batteries?

2. What is the maximum weight you are willing to carry?

3. How long are you willing to wait to make your purchase?

1) to be honest battery life is more a bonus, im willing to sacrifice battery life for 'stupid-speed'. My old lappy gave me a good 45min of game time...so ive gotten used to the idea of being plugged in.

2) Itd have to be less than 8lbs

3) I would want a unit on my lap before next year

athlon64 and pentiumM +m10p are around the corner, VooDoo pcs will have them up next month although pricy (athlon64 baseline is 3200 usd....ugh a lil expensive but I have to question how long the chipset will last? by the time 64 is mainstream itll be obsolete anyways?)

thanks

Given your requirements for game performance and battery life, I would recommend a laptop with a desktop CPU. Given your timeframe, I would recommend the Pentium 4 EE (Extreme Edition) CPU. I don't believe that the BIOS and drivers for Athlon 64 based systems will be mature until some time in 2004. I have past experience being an early adopter of a new CPU and I remember spending many hours hassling with immature system software.

See the following article for a comparison of the Athlon 64 with the Pentium 4 EE:

Given your budget, timeframe and requirements; I would look for a laptop with the following specifications:

Pentium 4 3.2 EE
ATi 9600 Pro 128 MB
1 GB RAM
7200 rpm HDD
15" screen with wide viewing angle
Less than 8 lbs

I don't know of any models today that have these specs, but I believe that you will be able to buy one before the end of the year.
