Build My Own Z71v

Thread Starter
I am going away to school and was looking at different laptops, over a year ago started with dell 8600 then went to dell 6000 then acer 8103 now it is asus Z71v.

I am planing on piecing it together myself through newegg and coboc.

Here are specs and prices:

$760.00 ASUS Z71V Pentium M(Dothan)/Celeron M 15.4" NoteBook
$142.00 ASUS Black IDE Slim DVD Burner
$300.00 Intel Pentium M 750 533MHz FSB Socket 478 Processor
$115.55 Transcend 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 retail
$179.00 Seagate Momentus 5400.2 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive
$32.00 INTEL WM3B2915ABGNAX Wireless Adapter
Extra Copy Windows Xp Pro
$30.48 Shipping

$1559.03 Total

I think that is a very good deal, tell me if I am missing anything...

Wont the Windows XP Pro software add another $200, more or less depending where you buy from, to the cost?

I have an extra copy.

So no

there has been some talk about better utilization of IDE channels if you get a SATA hard drive. I don't understand much of it, but some people are having slow disc burn times due to the hard drive and the optical drive on the same channel. All that to say: you might want to look at an SATA hard drive.

Looks like you and I are considering the same thing

See my previous thread HERE

I'm still waiting on my loan so I have yet to order the parts, but it looks good - let me know how it goes for you!

Rob, where would you recommend getting a SATA drive? None on newegg and/or coboc.com as far as I can see. Also, just to confirm, there are options for both PATA or SATA right? I mean, I won't have to specify what I want the chassis to support before I order it right?

The only ones availble right now is Fujitsu. You have to wait a month or so for Seagate and Hitachi to be available.
Ah, thanks for the info smilepak. Do you know where I might look at the Fujitsu drive? I'm really hoping to get a 80GB or more drive, so I'm hoping that will be available..

Also, just to confirm, the Z71V does come with support for BOTH PATA and SATA right? In other words, getting either of those drives would work without having to ask for a new chassis or part right?

EDIT:

I found the 40GB one off newegg... but looking for at least 80GB

Since you are building one...don't forget this..

Apply artic silver 5 compound over the CPU, GPU, and Intel Chipset. That is important!

Seagate has the 7200rpm SATA drives for the laptop out...just no one is caring them yet....www.seagate.com for more info. Availabale in 120gb, 100gb, 80gb, 60gb...etc.

Just make sure you're not missing a bracket or adaptor for the DVD drive

And you're going to have a bite missing out of the right side bevel without the original Z71 drive.

Good advice.. I would hope that coboc would include any parts with the chassis... but an email to them would be a good idea to clarify things.

What do you mean,

bite missing
?

Also, it's a major pain that the drives are not available.. technology just comes out too fast.. and by the time the drives are available, there will probably be a better notebook for the price....

Do you mean under a heatsink (is there one?) or just on top of chipset

I dont't have a Z71 with me for reference, but if its chassis is designed in any way similarly to that of the M6, then there's a good chance that a part of the right edge bevel is a component that's attached to the optical drive tray.

With out the oem drive, you'll be missing that bevel, and that edge will look a bit incomplete.

Is it something like the caddy for some Dell Laptops? For example, the caddy for the 600m includes the 'edge' and 'mic/headphone' cover. See HERE for what I mean.

Hopefully any Z71V users can answer this question for me.. the coboc forums are kinda dead..

Yes a caddy was what I was referring to.

The M6 has one and I'm almost certain the Z71 does too

Thanks for pointing that out - never thought of it. Justmonkey, if you do order this/contact coboc before I do, please let me know what the outcome is!

Me needs more and more and more money...
yup, there's an "edge" on the Z71v optical drive. You can't see it from the top, though. Just from the side. However, Coboc carries the original part, so you don't have to worry about it! And cheerfulnut, the Z71v does indeed suport both SATA and PATA. There's a small connector that you attach for SATA hard drives that ships with the system.

Awesome, thanks for the info Rob

Now just to see who will get it first *me prays and hopes that the new SATA drives will be available by the time the loan is approved*

Again, please let me know how things go on your end justmonkey
