i9300 to AV system ?

Thread Starter
I want to hook up the 9300 to a AV receiver, i want to know if i hookup the audio out from the laptop to the AV receiver, can the movie output DTC, DD5.1...etc to the AV reciever? Or i need a pcmcia card or usb external device to decode those dd5.1 and dts stuff?

also what is the best software to use to play the stuff to the tv? I am planing to try out some HDTV footage which i got from my "friend" and wondering what is the best way to get the best out of it.

thanks

First off, your receiver itself should do the DTS/DD decoding once the signal gets to it.

Second, your i9300 cannot output 5.1 channels of sound in a stock configuration. You'll need an external (USB 2.0) sound card w/ optical or coaxial digital output so you can get all the channels to the receiver to begin with.

Once you plug an optical cable in from the external sound card into your receiver, the receiver will do the DTS/DD decoding. I'm not 100% sure on what software you'd need to be sure it works, but I think nearly all PC DVD software outputs 5.1 channels if you have an external sound card connected.

Actually, the 9300 will output 5.1 digital. You need to get the adapter from Dell that plugs into the S-video port; this will give you S-video and SPDIF, which you can then connect to your receiver.

That's the key: it will output digital to a receiver, but you need something that turns that signal into speaker output. Like you can't plug it into a lot of the low-end "5.1" speaker systems for PCs which don't actually have a receiver built in: they come with 5 speaker jacks instead, and expect your sound card to shove un-encoded analog signals at them. Or, in the case of some Creative cards, you can have a single "digital" cable, but that digital signal isn't actually a 5.1 signal. It's Creative's proprietary signaling that is just carrying 5 channels of pre-decoded audio...

Is that a optical or coaxial digital output? I can't seem to find it on the Dell website. My portable Samsung player has a digital output that plugs into the headphone jack on the player. The 9300 actually outputs a digital signal through the S-Video jack???

Well, that is what dumpav was asking for...

It's coaxial, and you'll probably just have to call them and tell them what you want. I don't think I've seen it on the website, either, but I have seen posts from people who have them.

so i cannot hook the headphone jack to the red/white RCA to my AV system to get some dd5.1 or DTS?

these dd5.1/DTS/AC3 only go thru coaxial or optical?

You won't be getting anything digital through the headphone jack. That is only analog, Stereo signal.

I don't even think you can get Pro Logic through the headphones, but I'm not sure if that's software or hardware determined.

In any case, the best way to get the SVIDEO breakout box is to find the thing on ebay.
