There isn't much competition in this regard as most manufacturers were no doubt concerned about the broadcast flag rules that were set to go into effect which would have made these cards darn near useless. That ruling is in the air now.
The ATI is generally regarded as the worst of the three main chioces. Some have had success, but most only complain. The one regarded as the best is the MyHD MDP-130. It can have a daughtercard added to it for DVI output if you want to use it in the home theater. Check the AVS forums under Home Theater Computers. Losts of posts about these cards. I own none of the cards, so I can't provide much more.
