NEC ND-6500A only burning DVD at 4x

Just convinced Dell to send me the NEC ND-6500A DVD burner to replace the Sony DW-D56A, which would only burn DVDs at 4x.

I thought after replacing the drive, it would speed things up, but Nero will still only burn at 4x. Using Nero 6.3.0.125 with Maxell 8x media.

Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Not sure if this will help, but there is an update for the NEC burner on the Dell support site.....

Check you have the latest firmware, What media are you useing?

All DVD burners have this problem. They support different media at different speeds regardless of that media's labelled rate. Getting latest burner BIOS MAY help, or may not. Has nothing to do with the burner software. Search the forum for more info, like a list of the media which is supported at 8X.

There are ton of different firmware versions for that burner (I have the same one). Google is your friend and will probably solve your problem.

A little birdy told me that Dell dont like Maxwell or Memorix media. Like Sonic said try some different media see what you get.

You are wrong about the software, at least when it comes to Nero.
My nd6500a needed the latest update to burn at 8x.
I dont remember which version I was running before the update.

Yes the drive came with my XPS.
I used the 2.40 firmware (This is not the newest one) which has the riplock and reigion free bonuses.

I burn Ritek 8x media @ 8x all day long. I suggest you check out this forum http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 to educate yourself on that burner. I would highly suggest a different firmware as they typically allow cheap media such as yours to burn reliably at the highest speeds.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have been more clear. It's not a problem with the media (at least not so far...), it's that in Nero, the fastest option in the drop down menu is 4x.

Do you think a firmware update to the drive would "tell" Nero to give me an 8x option?

Nero will report the fastest speed that YOUR BURNER reports it can handle with the current media.

I'd really be looking at firmware hard.

By the way, Nero gives me the 4x max option even without any media in the drive

Same here on my Sony in my XPS2. I think this is BS. I thought i was getting an 8X Burner. Nero shows that the Sony is an 8X reader but a 4X burner. This is complete BS and i'm rather pissed about it.
