i'll wait and see the feedbacks. I'm scared of having a very expensive paperweight.

It is recommened to update your bios only if you really need to. Its not like a service pack or anything. Just upgrading to have the latest is a bit risky.

Some guys change BIOS like they were socks but I wouldn't to it unless I had a serious problem and that was my only hope. How many guys have fried perfectly good computers needlessly flashing the BIOS?

no problems with the new bios that i can see. interesting that the only fix is: "CPU speed info for Dothan 2.1GHz in BIOS Setup menu"...considering 700m is flavored in 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 that's interesting. also, it's interseting that one of the OS selections is windows xp x64 so dell is supporting 64bit for the 700m

Yeah my 700m sports it's original Bios, and unless I find a major problem or fix I need it always will. Bios Update do scare me somewhat. I recently update a Standalond DVD players firmware, the first time thru the update failed at the very end. Things started not working like the remote and the tray so I figured I had no choice I reupdated, this time successfull, restarted like it said to, when I tried to power it back up , it was completely dead.

if you are still using A00 or A01, i would recommend updating...the newer versions after A02 have better power management

i don't think its for the 700m exclusively, more of a generic os selection. i tried installing my copy of xp x64 on my 700m and it won't take on a non-64 bit system
post #14 of 20
i agree, but it is new as one of the OS selections
post #15 of 20
its cause you can buy that version of windows now
post #16 of 20
Yeah the option is there on the Dell website but it's useless since Pentium-M doesn't support EM64T. I doubt you can even install Win64 on a 700m since the installers won't detect 64-bit extensions.

Maybe with this new Bios, Dell will issue a new internal version of the 700m, meaning it can handle another processor speed? 64 bit instructions? faster memory, better graphics chip? We would have to wait and see by August what is under the hood of the latest 700m out there. My speculation, no rumors, just thinking about his Bios fix... sounds to fishy just to support a 2.1 dothan... hmmmmm... we need a mole in dell tech.

yes, but if dell wasn't going to support 64bit for the 700m, they wouldn't have listed it nor provided some drivers for it.
there aren't any drivers provided for it.. the only things that come up from x64 are the bios, diagnostics utility software, and bios upgrade for the dvd/cdrw combo drive

Hello? Does anyone here have a clue?

Pentium M DOES NOT SUPPORT EM64T. THE P-M IN YOUR 700M NOW WILL NEVER SUPPORT 64-BIT!!! EVER!!!!

The first P-M processor scheduled to *maybe* have EM64T in it will be Yonah, due sometime in 2H 2006. It is theoretically possible that in 2H 2006 maybe Dell will release a BIOS which supports Yonah in 700m and then you will get 64-bit support, but it's unlikely since Yonah will at least start at the 533mhz FSB and most likely will have a 800mhz FSB. It is unlikely that there will be a 400mhz FSB Yonah. Plus Intel hasn't even confirmed yet that Yonah actually will have EM64T, since P-M is still a mobile chip and Intel isn't planning to officially introduce P-M to the desktop for some time still. They might even wait until the P-M after Yonah to get EM64T into it.

There's a 99.999999999999999999999% chance that the reason Win64 is listed on the Dell website is simply because Dell sells some PCs, desktop P4 PCs, which support EM64T (any P4 with the Prescott core supports it) and they didn't feel a pathological need to make the option vanish when you select a system which doesn't have an EM64T capable CPU. Yes, it would cut down on the n00bs calling Dell and demanding to know why they can't install Win64 on their 700m's, but I don't think Dell cares too much.
