a way to avoid taxes on systems?

for those of us who live in states that dell taxes on systems, I was wondering if I could ship it to liek Arizona because I have relatives there, and all they do is ship it here to me in southern california? Would that work? B/C i configured it like that before i will buy, and it doesnt apply a $130 Tax! and 8 dollar enviornmental fee..I mean with all due respect, thats a lot of money, enought for 1 MORE gig of ram lol

And if it does work, do you think it might get damaged being shiped from Arizona to California?

And lets say I call tech support, will they assume I live at the adress that I shiped the system too? Cuz i heard its a hassel telling dell to ship a spare part to a different address from the one you bought the system on.

Again, Im not trying to aviod taxes like Al Capon, Im just a broke college student who needs to save as much $ as possible. Thank You

Sincerely Gary

Sounds like a hassle to me, plus you have to pay the extra shipping. If you’re on a tight budget just wait for a good coupon to make up the difference.

Shipping fee from Arizona to California hmm let's see

roughly 15-18 pounds so that will cost probably 15 bucks to ship.
Would you want insurance with that? I am sure you will want to buy at least a $2000 insurance depending how much it's worth. That will probably add around 25 bucks.

I highly doubt it will get damaged but accidents do happen then again that's what insurance is for. I would do it if Dell lets you ship it to Arizona and say that it's a gift for someone.

There is no reason it should not work. Just have a relative agree to do it.

Technically, what you are asking for is illegal. In California you have what is called the California Use Tax. Yet another "Sunshine Tax". Basically it is set up because California taxes are so high that a lot of people purchase out of state. The GubMent don't like that. I doubt anyone actually pays this, but here is the info on it from the California Board of Equalization...

That should be simple--after you get your notebook, you could just update your dell.com My Account profile to your Cali address, say you moved or something, though I'm not sure why Dell would ask...

You could however call yourself a business. All you need is a social security number and you can be a sole proprietorship. That allows you to write off the tax as an expense. In addition to that you can depreciate it on you next tax form and get 15% back as a cost of doing business.

Of course this is all if you want to do it legally. It is probably easier to do that Arizona thing. Way less frickin' paperwork.

Check on student discounts too. These seldom have the same discount level that some of the coupons have though.

Don't know if it's illegal but Dell allows second owners to assume the remainer of a current warranty, so I don't see it being a problem. Make sure you buy insurance for that second shipping.

What would be the tax on a $2000 system shipping to Miami
post #19 of 31
join the military and you can get your Dell tax free and about $300 off. A huge commitment for a comp., but Dells are worth it. J/K
