X1 - external pcmcia available?

Thread Starter
My parents ordered one, and received it. It is one light machine, but it doesn't have a pcmcia slot! And they use the Verizon wireless internet pcmcia card. Are there any external pcmcia devices available or anything that can fit inside the external device that dell uses for the cd-rom drive?

Thanks

The Latitude X1 comes with an internal Intel wireless card. It should work with any wireless router/Internet service, My Inspiron uses an Intel wireless card and works fine with my Verizon DSL wireless router

I think he's talking about Verizon's 3G network not wi-fi for which you need this pcmcia card:

I doubt it. PCMCIA was designed as an solution for notebooks with the PCMCIA slot. If your parents are within the 21 days since the X1 was received they can return it to Dell or exchange it for a properly configured notebook.

I would think an external PC card slot would be cumbersome to use with the Verizon card and kill any convenience factor the size and weight gave you in the first place.

I'm using the Verizon broadband card in a 700m with great results. I bought the 700m specifically to use with the service and ended up carrying the thing everywhere, it's a whole new world to have broadband at stoplights.

You can see the card in the lower left side of the computer. I use the Novatel V620 which has no flip up antenna. The antenna on the PC5520 and others can be a bit of a problem while trying to type. Get them to take a look at the 700m, it a great portable.

LOL, they were after your butt on that thread. I will unequivocally state it would be better to have the slot higher up but looking at what they had to work with, it's probably the only place they could have put it. I'll certainly put up with it for the pure joy of having my 700m!

yes, you can get an external USB pcmcia socket (there are some multicard readers that also have pcmcia slot, too), but like others have said, it is really inconvenient to having things hanging all out.

You could get a compact flash to pcmcia adapter like this one . I am not sure if verizon already has a compact flash type wireless card but I would guess that they eventually will. Sprint has one.
