is this a good notebook for a good price?

I went to circuit city today to look at notebooks and I found one that seemed like a pretty good deal. I'll mostly be using the notebook for college work and web surfing, and I would also like to edit a few videos with it too. I'm not sure if I'm going to get into gaming, but who knows. here's the components:

HP ZV6005 US

-AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor with cool 'n' queit technology
-DVD+/-RW/CD-RW w/Dbl Layer support
-512 MB DDR SDRAM Memory
-80 GB Hard drive
-Integrated 802.11g Wireless
-128 MB DDR ATI Dedicated Video Memory
-15.4" WXGA High Def Bright View Screen
-and I think it said 1600MHz FSB too.
-manufacturers warenty also included (1yr)

All for the price of $1099.99

should I consider or keep looking online?

Shady, I was also at Circuit City yesterday, and was very impressed with this notebook for this price ($1099). If I didn't have a notebook already, I would've ordered one (they're out of stock all over where I live, so I'd be waiting for it).

The price is great, and the features are very nice. If you don't mind the weight, get it. I don't think you can find a similar deal with a DVD burner built in for that price. Especially with 128 dedicated vram, 512mb ram, and an 80GB 5400RPM HD!

The only things that could make this thing better would be a wxsga monitor, a 7200RPM HD, 256MB dedicated video ram, and if it were AMD Turion, instead of Athlon. But that's just the good stuff you'll get with this, but improved a little.

Anyone disagree with me on this? Opinions?

Other than serious gaming it can practically handle anything else...
And I bet it would even play most games pretty decently. I currently have 128mb shared vram, and it doesn't do nearly as bad as I'd heard it would. Unreal Tournament 2004 and NFS HP2 play quite well on this pc. But I wish I had 128 dedicated! If you get it, I doubt you'll be disappointed in how it performs. Just don't add in the other 128mb shared ram that is an option. I've heard that can actually make high-end games run worse.

thanks for all the replies guys. I just looked on circuit city website and with the rebate it comes down to 1024.99. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get it. one more question though, how's the durability on this notebook?
Are you sure that it's 5400RPM??...I doubt it.

Well, I could be wrong. But when I asked the sales guy, that's the number he gave me.

Best Buy

Best Buy currently has the same notebook for the same price as CC, but theirs is a zv6007us (instead of a zv6005us), and it's got a 100GB HD!

I dont think so....you got a laptop with a maxed out spec and a lot of extra goodies

If you buy from a store you will just get a decently spec'd out laptop with standard 1yr warranty.

The retail pre-configured models have different model numbers like the ZV6005, 6065...to differentiate the laptops based on the specifications. If you but it directly from HP you will get the standard model number as ZV6000, R4000...

I don't think you got duped, because you got a whole heck of a lot of stuff, but that depends on what you need to use it for, and knowing what you paid for each option. Oh, as I was writing this, I saw that someone else answered your question already, so I'll just expand on part of it.

Basically, as I understand it, the stores buy a selected number of each notebook, with a set spec list, which is assigned a specific end number. For example, as far as I know, Best Buy and Circuit City both carry this same HP notebook. The difference is that the zv6007us at Best Buy has a 100GB, 4200RPM HD (vs. Circuit City's zv6005us 80GB, 5400RPM HD).

Otherwise they're the same notebook, as far as I can tell. I recommend going to Costco's website and configuring one there to see if you want to have any of the other spec options. I'm a Costco member, but even if you're not, I bet you can find somebody who is a member, if you really want to order from there. Either way, check out the spec options and find out a little more about what's available on this model, and what it'll cost you.

Oh, and just for reference, I was told by the guy in the comp department at Circuit City that their notebooks have been known to get 5+ hours of battery life (probably with a 12 cell battery), and have the 5400 rpm hard drive.

It will edit videos like a champ. I edit videos with mine and it doesn't have near the specs you have.
