External Hard Drives

Thread Starter
Just picked up a M680 and it's awesome. Spec'd 2gb ddr2 533 RAM, ati x700 128mb gpu, Pentium M 1.86 GHz and an unbelievably gorgeous 17 screen. Only have an 80gb hard drive which will cover me for a while.

In the future when I need more space will I have any problems picking up an external hard drive? Will there be a bottleneck at the firewire connection or the USB connection (not sure which one is quicker or which one external drives typically connect to)?

Any suggestions / comments are appreciated

the arguement has gone on between the two types (firewire and USB 2.0). I think the bottleneck using either method will be the the average joe about the same. I currently have my external hooked up via USB 2.0 and i don't notice much difference from when its hooked up via firewire.

Also here is an article that might help.

Firewire 800 is MUCH faster than USB 2.0, however firewire 400 is about the same speed. If you have firewire 800 use it, otherwise it is six of one half dozen of another. A lot of laptops only come with Firewire 400 though, check your specs.
