I heard a rumor that Asus used to build the chassis, though. Don't know if that's still true.

cuz it's a monopolistic firm. they are the sole providers of apple technology and aren't subjected to competition. as long as they can keep people interested in the apple, they can charge more. whereas in the pc market, theres a ton of companies all trying to sell what is basically the same product, so you get much more competition and cut throat pricing (at least more so than an apple).

Because they're as expensive as they're PC equivalent - Sony.

Because many people will pay that much.

Its the same reason that CDs cost so much - I mean is hearing Titney Spears garble out a few crapily written verses of lyrics she didn't write through a synthesizer really worth $17?

No. But 14 year old girls think it is.

I was at my friends and he just got a power book G4. I was there with my iXPS2.... needless to say the Apple was left all alone the entire time.

muhahah

I would seriously consider buying and using Apple products IF they were competitively priced. But they’re not, obviously.

Sad...

Sucks to know his apple has the radeon 9700 and costs $3,000, Sucks that I have the 6800 mine cost $2,000. A video editing machine with a crappy video card All that thing has is software you can't buy for PC.

I don't know that they are all that expensive. The cheapest is $999, and the most expensive on their site is $2699.

That's cheaper than equivalent Sony or IBM products, and about the same as Fujitsu and Asus, assuming the W2 is in the mid $2Ks.

You may say that Sony, IBM, Fujitsu and Asus are overpriced too, but they are the PC equivalents of well-designed, branded units sold through stores.

A more pertinenent question may be the graphics capabilities, but the 9700 was top of the range a year ago.

My beef is that their screens suck.

They are expensive because they are well-built and well-designed. Much like Apple and the others mentioned. They are not available in the States for the same reason LG laptops aren't. Samsung have signed agreements with those they supply notebooks to (who put their own brands on them) not to compete in the same market, eg, the Dell X1 is a Samsung X50 (or whatever the model).

I thought their screens were supposed to be great?

Nope. The highest resolution is WXGA+ for the 17", which is way too low. They haven't got into the enhanced glossy screens either. I take things I have done on my laptop into places I do work for and then must view them on Apple screens. They become a fuzzy grey mess.

This is no different from other WXGA screens as they are all made by the same people, but for a flagship product the screen on the 17" Apple is just ordinary.

Their external LCD Cinema screens are quite good, but still not close to the Sony Xbrite ot Fujitsu Clearview laptop screens.

Cheers

I was considering 12" Powerbook G4.

I would accept Apple price (with edu reduction),
I would accept 1,5GHz proc and 133 MHz FSB,
I would accept poor grafic.
I would accept 2.1 kg of weight.
I would enjoy the keyboard, the design, and Linux underlying MAC OS X.

However, I was not able to accept:
the relatively low display brightness and resolution. I was not comfortable with
XGA screen instead of WXGA.

So, I bought uniwill 223ii0 2GHz/1GB with crappy keyboard and loud fan for 200 euro
less than Apple's edu price for PB G4 but with 3 years of extended warranty and with
bright high resolution wide screen 12" display.

Think it over, dear Apple.
