Why are Apples so expensive - Page 2

I bought a 12" iBook G4, $899 after amazon rebate. For the price, with the software set, it's unbeatable IMO. Stylish design, airport built in, the ease of use of OSX were all fantastic.

However, I realised I couldn't live without a gaming laptop, so I sold it after three months and got an XPS2 from the Dell outlet store for a very reasonable price. So, I think the base models are an awesome deal for students/home use. But to game it's not an option unfortunately.

?!?!

Are you saying that apple has a monopoly on apple products? Well, Ford had a monopoly on Ford products (etc.)

Mouch more competition like Windows?

I use both. I like PC hardware better, but for most things I like Mac OS much better.

That's cheaper than equivalent Sony or IBM products, and about the same as Fujitsu and Asus, assuming the W2 is in the mid $2Ks.

You may say that Sony, IBM, Fujitsu and Asus are overpriced too, but they are the PC equivalents of well-designed, branded units sold through stores.

A more pertinenent question may be the graphics capabilities, but the 9700 was top of the range a year ago.

My beef is that their screens suck.

Steve
I was seriously considering a migration to a Mac laptop, even though they are OVERPRICED.

What stopped me was the lousy screen.

Fujitsu, Sony, Toshiba all possess far better screens.

Agreed, Mac screens do indeed suck.

I'd guess that Apple products are more expensive because they make them in the US, where manufacturing costs are higher than China and Taiwan. I don't know this. It's just a guess.

They are waaaaay to pricey for my taste. Plus I think its got some of the worst build quality I've ever seen! I bought an iBook back in the day and the OS crapped out the first day. Then pixels started dying, the battery stopped holding charge, the CD drive stopped working, and finally the HDD drive died. The beauty is, I didnt even carry it around. Just used it at a desk at home...

IMHO, Apple=Crap

No, my comparison is not like that. My comparison is that if you want an apple, you only get to choose from one company, apple; whereas with pcs, if you want an intel cpu you can choose btwn many different oems like asus and acer who are all competing against eachother for sales. the comparison i would make is like if only one company made suv's and there were multiple companies making sedans. if you want an suv, you only have one choice.

Apple notebooks are manufactured in Taiwan ("made in China" means Taiwan,
"made in P R China" means red China) and "designed in Califoirnia"

Apple computers really aren't that expensive there are gaming laptops over 3 and $4000 bucks. Apples don't suck just depends on what you want it for. I own a PB, have had it for 3 years..still going and it works great. I think what keeps most people coming back is the OS and the look factor. I pull out the PB at meetings and people look at the screen and ask what version of windows is that, and they do look slick especially when you paint'em.

I find that very hard to belive. I think that the real reason why your lappy failed is that you had it plugged in all the time and the electricity line isn't of a good quality. If the voltage is lower, even for a few seconds, the battery starts to drain and acts as a life cycle ruining it much faster. Voltage peaks ruin sensible components (wich in a laptop are almost all).

Dont think so, because I was always plugged into a lab grade surge protector and all my outlets are GFI...I guess it is possible it was just mine, but ive seen structural and battery problems with a lot of ibooks...

Don't have an apple yet but I plan on getting a powerbook over the summer. I have been using PC's for 5 years and laptops based off Windows for 2. Yeah, they can't game, that's obvious, but I want a laptop with on OS that works. That instantly rules out a laptop based on Windows. Their screens suck? Lol, that's funny, their screens are just as beautiful as their chasis. You don't need a high resolution on their powerbooks, it wouldn't look right with the way Mac OS is set up. Rip on apple and mac's all you want, but it's usually not the mac users who complain about how their laptop won't boot up. GOGO WINBLOWS

Don't believe any of the arguments on supposed quality.

The simple fact is because people are willing to pay that much

Basic market forces.
