Partitioning question...reformatting

I reformatted and created new partitions. One for XP, one for downloaded material, one for games, and the rest for files/docs.

**If one partition gets a virus, can the virus spread to the other partitions?? I am thinking yes, but I want to check it out here.**

the partitions do not increase the storage capacity of your computer at all. But the way it works, you can only install operating systems one per partition, and only on a blank partition. Therefore, to reinstall windows, you have to wipe the partition its on. If that's your only one, you have to back everything up to cd or something. If not, you can move the stuff to another one while you reinstall. Also, if windows dies and wont boot, having a small amount of unpartioned space or a partition that you know will always be blank is nice because you can install windows there and recover your data. I will never use a computer without at least 2 partitions myself, but that's my style.

i would use 2, 1 for your os and one for music/pictures/music/other crap.

the advantage of having partitions is so that if one drive ****s up, you dont have to format the entire thing and lose all your info, it's like putting a wall up to separate your drive

How much space should I leave for XP?

Also, should I put XP on the C partition or not? I have read that hackers target this partition the most. I believe C is the default partition, that is why I was wondering what partition to put XP on.

http://partition.radified.com/partitioning_2.htm For those who have questions like mine, here is a good guide.

I am going to dedicate just the first 8GB to the OS and applications.

if oyur ognna use XP with a few programs installed, i recommend 8 - 15 gb.. if its just plain xp and nothing else, 5 gb should be enough

Yeah, I used 12GB for XP. In order to install XP, it reformatted the partition for me. The other three partitions I have to do, and I have a good windows article in front of me helping.

Thanks tho.

Well, I did it. I just installed all of the drivers. I am just going to install of my files off of my ipod tomorrow. The partitions are very niice. I have a partition each for games, XP, downloads, and files.

Searching around the internet is best. Ratified's site helped a lot. Dell's support helped a lot. The Microsoft site helped a lot when formatting the partitions. Good luck if you are reformatting and partitioning. Arrrrr.
