Ok, i got my R32 used from a friend for about 900 in 01/02.
And i have had to send it in twice to get it fixed. The first time a LCD cable replacement, and then the second time a mobo replacement. But ever since i got the laptop back its been crap. Its always unstable even on fresh installs of XP. It would crash like almost right away and BSOD all the time. So i never really used it and used my desktop 99% of the time for the next few years. My desktop recently just went down and i wiped out my R32 and well it sucks balls. So with my knowledge of computers, i decided to fix this myself since the laptop was out of warranty by now.
I opened the sucker up cause i am thinking its a hardware related issue and i poked around. When i got it totally disassembled and then i removed the heatsink unit. GUESS WHAT! NO THERMAL PASTE!!! NO THERMAL PAD!!! WTF! So i wonder why my laptop sucked so much. I wondered if it damaged anything but i doubt it cause my laptop couldn't stay on long enough to even use it. So i put some AS5 on the core and put everything back together. Then i checked out the GPU and well it has a thermal pad and i tried to replace it with some thermal paste but the gap was to big from GPU core to the heatsink. So i just cleaned up the existing thermal pad that was on there and put it on nicely . Did you know that the heatsink area doesn't even cover the whole GPU core?!? Anyway i got everything put back and i been running the laptop at 100% load for the past 5 hours and i haven't gotten a single error or BSOD and no signs of stability issues.
Has anyone run into this problem where IBM just forgets to add thermal paste and your computer goes to crap? Or just forgets to put things back together correctly? Sorry for my long rant. I seriously was doubting IBM laptops before this but not i think i have fixed the problem and i have a better image of the laptop itself now.
