9300 -> XPS2 (bios change)

well, I finally got the XPS 2 bios on the 9300. It works fine, other than the fact that it won't boot without a 9 cell or a 130W power adapter.

Any benifits?

Do you have the 9cell and power supply?

What would the difference in BIOS do?

Any benefits aside from having to start up on the 9cell i borrowed from a friend, then plug in the 9300 power adapter? not really, but this may open the way to using the Go 6800 Ultra on a 9300, or having the LEDs actually function on a 9300...

Well, when I borrow a voltometer I'm going to see if the LED "pin" points give juice now

There is someone on here that has a 6800 ultra in his 9300, I pm'ed the link to this thread, maybe you can give him the bios to see if his ultra will work. Orignally the computer didnt reconize the ultra as an ultra.

Is there anyway you could add overclocking to the bios?

This is the mainboard BIOS, not the video bios. completely separate.

I meant to the motherboard.

yeah, the guy couldn't get his motherboard to recognize the 6800 ultra, even though the BIOS on the video card is a 6800 Ultra, but the i9300 BIOS wouldn't recognize it as an ultra, only a regular 6800 go.

I just got to ask....................why didnt you just buy a XPS2?

Do you actually use this PC or spend most of the time mod'ing it?

Because with luck we can make a XPS2 out of a 9300 with half the cost!

Besides the plastic/metal skin, and the video card that has a higher quality core and GDR3 memory it is the same.

You will never overcome the limit of the video RAM in your 9300.....no matter what you do to the BIOS.

Did you not read a few posts up where the guy put the ultra in his 9300 but the bios only recognized it as a Go so the card was being limited I think we are gonna see some nice mods for the 9300 we can already pin mod and get faster cpu's speeds over the xps2 right now.

Sure I read it. So he bought a 9300 and took out the orginal video card...lets say the standard 6800 and then bought a 6800 Go Ultra.

Its in my experience its WAY more expensive to buy a video card for a Dell laptop after the fact...compared to buying it up front, ala XPS2. So I cant imagine the end game will be cheaper than just straight out purchasing the XPS2....and maybe more expensive.

Add in the fact that you could possibly kill the 9300 by by using the XPS2 BIOS (over volt something you dont know about) and of course what you are doing would NEVER be covered with a warrenty................it could be WAY more expensive than just getting the XPS2 from the get go if your tinkering goes badly. All to get a better 3dmark score and some case bling bling

But hey what people do with their time and money is none of my buisness.

I couldn't afford an XPS 2.

The 9300 is the XPS2, sans one connector for pins. Everything different is external -- The power supply, case, LEDs, graphics daughtercard, heating solution, and kinda the battery. Overvolt what? This is the same machine. Dell pulled the same stunt with the 9100 and XPS 1, only this time they made sure the 9300 bios wouldn't work with a Go Ultra. But they can't change the fact that the XPS2 bios works on the 9300, so they made sure that the 9300's default config wouldn't work with an XPS 2 bios.

And yes, this is my main machine. Spend all my time modding it? I've opened it all of once, I didn't even add Arctic Silver. =P

So, did you get the led's to work?

These Goes to Everybody Whoever Trying to Make His 9300 an XPS Gen2

- I know how it feels like I had the same feeling when I had my 9100...

- I was trying to make it like an XPS Gen1, but no did NOT work...

- I even bought the XPS clothing (all the spare parts and everything)...

- Yea! It was like an XPS Gen1 but still it was saying 9100 Series at the bios opening...

- A 9300 will NEVER be like an XPS Gen2, so you mates have to accept the fact...

- I am not going to talk about technical facts here coz you alll know'em...

- It is quiet easy to say that hey there's nothing different between an xps gen2 and a 9300, 'cept for video card, cool leds and a gigabit ethernet...

- Hey didn't you just said " except for video card, cool leds, and a gigabit ethernet"...

- The price...Why the heck is an xps more expensive than a 9300...

- So just except the fact that you don't own an xps gen2 but a 9300...

- That will make you more happy with your lappy...

- I even purchased the 9300 before the xps gen2 but then returned it...

- I realized that nope! it wasn't the same thing at all...

and m8s don't hate me for this!

But it is the same thing. It runs the same hardware other than 2 worthwhile differences (Gigabit Ethernet, 6800 Go Ultra).

You can't say it isn't the same thing. If I:
A) pull a Dellbert and switch the casing
B) attach the LEDs
C) add the Ultra
D) add Gigabit Ethernet

Then I DO have an XPS. I have nullified any differences there are between the two. Period. They will be running hte EXACT same hardware.

No, I haven't checked out the LEDs yet.

I flashed back to the 9300 bios because I don't own the 130W PS/9 Cell yet. I'll do more tests when I have the equipment I need to make this a permanent switch.

All I did was see if Windows booted successfully, then dropped back to dos and flashed the bios back.
