Video card and s video out

Hey guys I have hooked my laptop up to my TV before to play DVDs and everything has worked fine. I was wondering if there is a way to play .avi files? I tried to play one using win amp and WMP9 and all I see is a black box where the file should play. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? Any ideas?

Use a different media player and set the s-video out as the proper setup for the tv. I've had hit and miss success with Media Player Classic (123 edition) and Power DVD. I've also had success setting up the option to "extend my desktop onto 2nd screen" checkbox, and then dragging the media player program onto the other screen. Also remember to maximize the screen to full screen mode when playing back the video. If all else fails try another program or file type until something works and then backtrack to find out what you did different.

In my experience .AVI files will only show video on whichever you select as the primary display. If you want to play it on the tv, make sure you select the tv as your primary display, then it should work flawlessly in any media player. Also, make sure you have the correct codec for it, as it could be divx, 3ivx, xvid, etc.
