Got my 9300, help comparing notes

I like a lot of things about this laptop. As a non gamer, this replaced a 5year old P3 laptop. It's not heavy at all, I think lighter than the 15" I replaced. Speakers are great, just for the occasional video clips, soft volume/background music. Love the keyboard feel, although they could have laid the keys better to utilize the extra space. The fan noise is ok, I can hear it but it's not high pitch at all; I've lived with no fan/ no fan noise on my old laptop. The colors are ok, no complaints as I did a hardware calibration and got to to 6500K 2.3 gama (couldn't get it to 2.2 target). Brightness is good, but I have to set it at the max to get white whites of my liking. I'm not anal enough to try out every single feature but have some negative comments about some of the features that I have used thus far. They pertain to the screen (Samsung) and side USB ports.

The only thing about the screen I don't really like, but can live with for the huge price difference between this and a Sony, is the sparkle on whites/grays, and also, it appears the right side of the screen is brighter than the left side. I have a one inch light leakage on the bottom, but that doesn't bother me much.

The USB ports on the back of the laptop wiggle a little when you try to wiggle it (vertically) with a USB plug attached. This seems normal. But the ones on the side, they move up and down alot. I can get the metal part of my plug to move all the way down to touch the middle plastic frame that seperated the two ports. Like I said, I'm not anally trying to test everything, and have not. I just happened to have some things pluged in and when I went to pull it out, I though I broke it since it was way loose. I wonder if you guys experience the same looseness.

Now I've read all about the screen sparkles. Like I said, I can live with it since I don't want to spend $800 more to get a lower end spec Sony with the best screen. Is my assumptions correct that the concenses regarding sparkle, the Samsungs in general have less sparkle than the LG? What about the uneven backlighting? I'm not bothered with the once inch light leakage on the bottom because I don't notice it much (it's at least even from left to right lol).

I'd like to hear from people that have had screen replaced. If what I have is the best I can get, then I'd just settle for it. But if there are panels that have even lighting, then I'd prefer that. And I also rather not have any MORE sparkle than what I can see now. Less would of course be better.

Lastly, how should I go about getting a new panel( if I deem it necessary)? I got this about 9 days ago, but only played with it 2 days ago. Do I just go ask for a replacement? Or should I return it and re-order to get another 21 days? I'm thinking I should ask for a replacement and if that sucks too, return both units are re order. This make sense? I have a good HD, it's the 80GB 5400 16mb Toshiba (as long as it's 5400, I'm happy). I also got the Sony DVDRW, some write it's louder and not as media friendly as the NEC, but I don't use even my desktop recorder much, so that doesn't bother me. It's just down to if I can get a better screen and a fix for the USB (if it is out of spec). Thanks for your inputs.

I do not notice the usb ports being loose. As far as the screen, I have the LG with no sparkles. It does have some light leakage at the bottom. There is also a small dark area near the clock on the taskbar. I did not ask for a replacement because this does not bother me. You will have to decide if you want to live with your current screen. If not, ask for a replacement.

You can probably talk them into sending you a replacement screen and then either a "tech" can install it for you or you can install it on your own. I would suggest the latter so that you can do it carefully (have heard stories about notebooks being damaged during that process as it is VERY easy to scratch).

The procedure can be reviewed here:

It seems like more people say the colors are better on the LG. But the whites are definitely better on the Samsung. There really is no white on the LG only silver. The Samsungs also seem to have a reputation for having more light leakage, but yours doesn't sound that bad. My Samsung has practically none. The LG I originally got had horrible light leakage and sparkle. A few people have all along said they had no sparkles. Many people have claimed they had no sparkles but then later said, they did have sparkles and that they either didn't notice it or wouldn't have called it sparkles. Still a few more people are claiming they've seen sparkles but have now gotten a completely sparkle free screen. I'm suspicious of that, but there's really no way to know. The sparkle layer (anti-glare layer) definitely seems to contribute to the screens not being as bright and whites looking silvery. So an LG with minimal light leakage and no sparkle/anti-glare layer could be the best possible screen. There's no way to request and get this, though, even if it was known to exist.

My USB ports are all tight.

Hmm, thanks guys. My USB port on the side is definately loose. I can plug one item in there, and the entire 2 port will move up and down in unison. I guess it's a two plug one unit module. I am guessing that the only way to fix this by myself is to open the unit up and stick something under the module. This doesn't look workable though. And I'm using these two ports more than the rear one since it's more accessible.

I guess they would need to replace the entire unit just for the USB? Which would mean... I may get a crappier screen. Oh great.

If you are within the first 21 days I would definitely send it back for a replacement. Perhaps you will also get a Samsung screen - they tend to have a less pronounced sparkle effect. Just for the record my first XPS GEN 2 was an LG. I asked for a replacement LCD - DELL sent two Samsungs (they were only supposed to send one but there was a mixup - one showed up with a tech to install and the other was send directly to me). But the notebook died before I got around to installing either new LCD. They sent a replacement notebook which had a Samsung screen. However it had a dead pixel. So I installed both of the other LCD's (which I held on to . . just in case) and kept the one that I liked the most.

anettis, thanks for the link to the disassembly instructions. I found out that the USB is indeed one module, and thankfully it's not connected directly to the motherboard, so the up/down movement isn't likely to break it. It seems to either be a screw loose, or the screw is missing. However, for me to fix this, holy cow, I have to remove practically everything, which includes the screen, and palmrest. Just to tighten the screw (if it's there, which one is suppose to be).

Today I found out that the right side of the white plastic on my palm rest to have some flex. I can live with it, but now I'm wondering maybe I need to check everything out and be anal.

Anettis, can you describe what the two Samsung replacement screens you had were like? Why you picked one over the other, and how's the one you finally kept? As I mentioned, I do have a Samsung. I can see the sparkles clearly on whites/grays. But what isn't great is that I see the left side, nearer to the left bottom quadrant as being darker than the right side. Also, just today, I'm noticing my whites are a little pink on the left side and white on the right. I calibrated my monitor with a hardware calibratior. Whatever it is, I just fear returning this (i'm still within 21 days) and getting a crappier unit. Just out of curiosity, how many times can you return the units? Can I keep returning and buying a new unit to keep the 21 day alive? lol, I don't think I have time to play the Dell shuffle though.

One Samsung replacement had either a bad pixel or some kind of imperfection that I could see. The second Samsung replacement did not seem to have any imperfections - so this is the one I kept. I believe they all had light leakage, especially at the bottom, but that seems to be the par for the course. Overall I am happy with my final LCD.

Of the two Samsungs I've used:

#1:
+Little light leakage, screen lighting fairly even
+Light leakage almost entirely gone after using it for about 10 days
+2 Stuck pixel
+Yellow color bias

#2:
+Whites whiter than #1
+No color bias. Isn't sickly yellow-white on white or like having a blue saran wrap over screen
+More light leakage. Not excessive, but more
+No dead/stuck pixel
+Lighting is more uneven than on the panel #1

The LG screen for me had a far more distinct dust-pattern than the Samsung did. The LG's sparkle is like dots of dust on the screen that you can't get off, while on the Samsung it just looks kinda like a faint patterned overlay. Also, the LG has a really, really, really bad blue bias. It takes a lot of tweaking to get rid of it (or at least it did for me, I have no hardware to do it).

In any case, you can request a screen replacement and if it's worse, just send it back. Many people have done this. You can also request an entirely new unit and just change screens around if you want. Assembled screen units are pretty easy to swap, you only need to undo 6 screws and pop off the hinge cover and the minipci/wireless cover (to take the antenna off, which is part of the screen assembly).

No offense intended, but wow, what a hassle! Or at least it would be to me.

I have about a one-inch light-leak (LG) with no sparkle or dust. I'm not sure it would be worth it to go through that grief and inherit something worse, or just equal to what I have.

I asked this question before, but never got a definitive answer as to if it's really "worth it" but from what I am reading here (replacing three, or four times????) seems it's not.

The only time I notice the light leak is "from the side, and in the dark" and that's just not the way I (or most people) use a computer.

I don't understand. Can it just be "the nature of the beast?" Or is there really a solution for a perctly uniform, deep black screen with this type of unit?

That being said, I love the glossy look, and for image editing the thing is a joy to work with. Playing games is incredible.

I guess it's a matter of personal choice as to "satisfaction," but I still haven't heard back from many folks saying they were ultimately 100 % satisfied after all these exchanges.

Hazridi, I guess you kept the #2 Samsung? Did the lighting even out? I guess you settle on the #2? Your description of the Samsung screen is exactly what I see, a faint pattern overlay. And yes, looking at the schematics, swapping assembled screens looks a whole lot easier (in particular, I don't know how one would take off the rubber bumpers to get at the screw, and still be able to reuse them). Why did you not keep your Sony with the better screen?

anettis, the final Samsung you kept, was it sparkle free?

sonicwind, I read your review, and concur with your description about the screen. So what did you end up doing? Selling the Sony for the 9300(if so, what were the reasons)? You gave the screen a 5/10 rating. Any update? I assume that you are living with the sparkles with screen you settled on?

I guess I'm going to be asking for a replacement. If the screen is worse, I will still do a screen swap myself, because the loose USB looks pretty hard to get to (taking the laptop apart essentially).

Last question. I like the brightness but am worried that I'm using it at the highest setting. I would think the screen will get darker as time goes by? BTW, I am getting a reading of 160 cd/m2 at max brightness setting from my hardware calibrator.

bubba, looks like you've got an almost perfect screen. I've got light leakage, but that doesn't bother me. It's more the uneven lighting, and sparkles. I'd suggest you keep yours. In more words than your comment, I tried to basically ask the same thing to the posters. What did they end up with and are they satisfied.

Hello exe,

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I received my 9300 not all that long ago, and have had the LCD (Samsung) replaced because of excessive light leakage. They gave me another Samsung, with pretty much the same amount of leakage - maybe a bit more consistent - I had the tech come out to do it for me because I was worried about the warranty (silly me). He left me some damage on my machine (he used his screwdriver to pry open things).

The light leakage is about 1.5 to 2 inches, and is more consistent than the original LCD supplied to me. Also, now that I understand what "sparkles" means (thanks guys!), I can see them and I can say that I have them.

The main thing that bothers me immensely is the fact that I am thinking it really isn't good enough for home usage. If it was a work laptop, I would NOT care - it performs work-related tasks fine. However, when I watch any movies or things with DARK backgrounds, I find the light leakage is present. Dell have never offered me a replacement machine. I am now considering returning the laptop because of immense dissatisfaction with the customer service team (they have not managed to return even ONE of my calls).

It is not sparkly like the LG, but there is a sort of pattern to light colours that can been noticed slightly.

I've had my 9300 a few months now and the LG screen seems fine to me. I do have some light leakage at the bottom (which seems to have gotten better the more I use it.....odd) and havn't noticed the sparkles that every one has talked about. My USB ports are loose (wiggle) on the side too. Like you, I use the side ports most but I was told it was nothing to worry about. The only thing I wish I had done was order it with the 6800 card. I got the 128 ATI 300 which does a good job (overclocks well) but plan to upgrade it sometime to the 6800. I'll tighten the USB port then!
