i9300: Ethernet doesn't work (card disabled?)

Hello.

I've been using WLAN since I got this gorgeous laptop, but today I tried plugging in ethernet to copy some files, but it didn't even detect cable was plugged in. Is the ethernet card disabled? I'm using the Windows XP Home that was installed on the computer when I got it, no time to change yet.

Any help?

did you reformat? if so you might have forgot to install the driver for the port.

As I said, I'm using Dell's pre-installed Windows XP Home.

go get the driver for it then, if something doesnt work 9/10 times its the driver.

It has worked once. But it seems the card is disabled in some way.

Quickset may have disabled it.

Start->Settings->network Connections->Local Area Connection

This should enable the card if it's disabled

does it say "Local Area Connection" and are the 2 pc screens blue or grey? also try disabling your wireless connection then try the ethernet.

I use the port everyday with my DSL. I would not say it is a piece of crap.

Ethernet card may be disabled

Please note tha when starting the I9300 (& other Dell laptops) on battery power only the default setting is to have the Local Erea Connection (10/100 Ethernet card) disabled. The card can be turned on by gaining access to the following:
Control Panel\Network Connections\Local Erea Connection

Right click on Local Erea Connection and select "Enable".

Or, you can go in to the BIOS and set the card to be active when booting on the battery.

I have had this exact same thing happen to me. I use my 9300 a lot at work, and generally use the WLAN there. What typically happens to me is when I want to switch back to the wired LAN, the computer does not detect the cable it plugged in. The controller is enabled in the network connections and the computer is plugged in, but the little icon shows next to the clock saying no cable is plugged in, the lights on the controller don't light up, and webpages won't load. The computer just acts like there is not network cable plugged in.

What I have found to usually resolve this is to have the network cable plugged in when I start the computer or disable the wireless controller. I have also found disabling and re-enabling the wired controller brings it back to life.
