Clocking on the M9

Hey, I've read about core clocking for the M10, and understand its purpose, kinda. I was wondering, is there any way to do this on the M9? I would like to boost my graphics performance a little more, since for some reason, BF1942 runs choppy at 1024x800, while Secret Weapons doesn't. Strange. And, my card seems to slow down when on batteries, and then the normally smooth SW gets really bad. Any suggestions, or should I post this in gaming?

I've used the Overclocker in Rage3d Tweak and it installs and works. So does Powerstrip. I wasn't able to bump mine much in R3D before getting disruption. My core\memory (258\180), particulary memory, seemed lower than others reported. I got mem up to 204. Surf the forums for some other results.

I don't have R3D Tweak installed presently as I just loaded the OmegaCorner Cat 3.7s yesterday. He doesn't suggest using tweakers as it overrides his settings, but I had no prob with R3D 3.8 on his Cat 3.6s. I liked the R3D game EXE parms you could setup.

Keep us "posted" on how it goes for you.

P.S. I've had different results with different games too, i.e. some run smooth as silk, others, like GTAIII, get pauses (low FPS pauses I believe). Generally the recent Cat drivers have run well. For the problem games, it helps to shutdown a lot of the misc. background apps. I haven't tried BF 1942 so I can't speak to that.

I personally like to use powerstrip. Right now I am at 260/200,without any lockups or visual distortions. I'm using the omega 3.6 drivers. I play intense BF and I think it runs ok. I play under 800x600 rez too. It runs a ton better under this rez, without much quality drop. I get about 30-65 frames in the desert combat mod for BF. Secret weapons ran perfect on my laptop and come to think of it, it is strange that it runs so good... It might have to deal with something about the way they made the maps, oh well. Have fun tweakin'

p.s. running on batteries makes the cpu throttle down, thus poorer performance.

Using Powerstrip

Ok, started up powerstrip, and default, my card is running 250/190. I'm using the 7.89's off the Sager site. How should I proceed, adjusting the clock speeds, that is? Should I get the new Catalyst 3.8's after they're modded?

Verrry carefully, bearing in mind you're potentially increasing the heat output and fry-ability of your graphics chip and lappy. (NOT covered by warranty.) I'm not the expert on OC'ing and haven't found much info, other than these forums, on Mobility owners OC'ing. There are plenty of sites devoted to general graphics and CPU OC. You might surf the forums and some OC sites for background. There are some that explain all the settings (example ). Some recommend bumping Memory in increments of 5 until you get the desired results or disruption. I think too much OC can make a game run worse rather than better. Since my 8887, and most games, run so darn good most of the time, I've spent as much time tweaking all the OTHER things when running problem games, such as shutting down all unnecessary apps in the SysTray and Task Manager (touchpad, soundman, virus software, etc), tweaking individual graphics settings (OpenGL and 3D towards Performance rather than Quality, low res setting like 1024x768 or 800x600). Check out Rage3D Tweak, too. It has a way to have settings for specific game apps, so when you execute that game it immediately changes the settings. Hope that will get you started.

Ummm...

Well, I went very carefully, but as soon as I started to move things up, programs started to become unstable. Pixels flashing, whole sections flashing, just complete chaos. Set everything back to normal, and the problems remained, so I reinstalled the drivers. Anything I am doing wrong?

Sounds like it's "maxed" as far as OC is concerned. From what I've read you can't expect the same OC out of the same brand chip (like M9, M10 or whatever) from one machine to the next. I don't think it's a deficiency. Look for other ways to tweak your BF1942 settings. Also, search the forums for others OC results. Perhaps some more experienced OC'rs will jump in. I think Drivers fanz check this category often. You might put a reference thread in Gaming, pointing back here.

I had the EXACT same problem with powerstrip. A restart will fix any visual defects that you may see. I dont know why it needs it, but do it and it will work.

Yep, restarting helped. Right now, I'm at 254/195, and will update as I go. Thanks.
