WHICH DELL LAPTOP SHOULD i BUY?????? - Page 2

I suggest the 9300, the most versatile of all the dell models, nice screen size and not as big as some claim, check the dell specs, and feel free to check my posting on this dilemma, I ended up going with the 9300 and couldnt be happier with my decision, take mine to work every day. You'll appreciate the nice size screen and performance of the video card over the smaller models. same price as a 6000 too, use dell coupons, they are everywhere online

Cheers

Having a subwoofer on a laptop is silly. Laptop speakers always sound terrible so if you're serious about sound quality you'll want external speakers anyways. A subwoofer would be a waste of space and adds weight to the already heavy 9300. If I were you, I'd go with a lower end portable computer and a gaming desktop. You get the best of both worlds then.

And as far as processor speeds go, I wouldn't go for the top of the line one. Usually you pay a huge premium for a much smaller increase in performance. Unless that little bit extra is really that important, you get more bang for your buck with a lower end chip. In the end, they'll all become obsolete together anyways (or, just upgrade sooner with the money you save now).

The M70 has a better video card for the work that engineers and architects do, but the 9300 has a better video card for gaming.

with all the coupons and discounts going on right now you can get a 9300 or a 6000 for about the same price, maybe a hundred dollars difference, I got my 9300 for just under 1500 dollars with a 750 off coupon 1.86ghz, 80gig hd, cdrw/dvd rom drive, wxga+ screen (samsung x4766) and intel wireless 2915 abg. 256 megs of memory ( bought a gig elsewhere and saved a hundred dollars). the 9300 has the 6800 nvidia card in it and 17 inch screen, I would recommend this system to you or perhaps the 6000 inspiron but not the 700m, its too tiny and the keyboard is not full size and generally sucks, plus it has integrated graphics.

According to most users, the sound on the i9300 is surprisingly good, and part of that is due to the subwoofer. Ppl are surprised how good the sound is for a laptop, or so I hear.

Obviously you dont have a 9300, looking at dells specs and professional reviews indicates it is only a pound heavier than the 9300 and less than that compared to a d810 or m70. As for the subwoofer it is far from silly. though small (added weight? are you serious? its a 1inch subwoofer) the subwoofer adds an extra octave that makes an immense difference in the sound as anyone who has a built in sub on any model of laptop can tell you. My 9300 weighs in at 8 pounds, now if 8 pounds is too heavy for you and your not handicapped you either need to stop smoking or get some more exercise.
It is only half an inch deeper and an inch wider than the inspiron 6000 which is also a fairly good system except for the graphics card and it has a smaller widescreen. When you consider that the price difference between these two systems is usually less than a hundred dollars, it makes the 9300 that much more appealing for its price and performance.
If you absolutely are going to die from carrying an extra pound around then go with the 6000, the 600m is not as good an investment and not built very sturdy compared to the new inspirons.

I do agree however , with necrosis on the gaming aspect, desktops are the way to go if gaming is all that you want to do.

The nice thing about the 6800 go card is streaming video, using dvds and ever more graphically demanding web pages. Plus digital vibrance.

as for which processor to select, you will find a performance boost in the 1.73 or 1.86. both processors are in a sweet spot for price and performance as compared to the 1.6 and 2.0

I don't think so, at least not for me. $100 CDN or $80 USD for each jump in 0.13GHz wasn't too justifiable for me. So I downgraded my 1.86GHz to 1.6GHz to save $200. I think I'll miss out on about 16.25% to 5% of performance, on average, for various tasks, including gaming. Anyways, I guess $200 CDN is quite a bit for me (hmm, it's about 10% of my laptop's price, if you include the 3-yr CompleteCare warranty).

You won't notice a difference between 1.6 and 1.73, or even 1.6 and 1.86. If you are not going to upgrade to the 2.0, I'd take that money on spend it on RAM or something.
Yeah, definitely, if you had to choose between going from 512MB > 1GB of RAM, or 1.6GHz to 1.86GHz, or even 2GHz, I'd probably say go for the RAM. If you're planning on getting the RAM no matter what, then I'd say go for CPU upgrade if you think it's worth the price difference.

It's funny because the guy who is asking the info hasn't posted in this thread since May.

I am a gamer, but the lappy that i buy doesn't need to be a gaming machine. i want to stay between 900 - 1200$. I can get a bigger machine like the 9300 and downgrade it slightly - i.e. 1.6 instead of 2.0, smaller video and memory, OR I can go with a smaller machine like the 6000 or the 700m with a few more upgrades. Which is the better move? i want to be portable, I want power, i want something that i will be able to surf with without waiting for long downloads of web pages. Gaming would be nice - BUT pwer for the internet, email, downloads, cd burning is the main issue. What are your opinios - I NEED HELP HERE!!!!!
Go with the 9300, check my specs in my signature, just under 1500 with 750 off coupon. Stay away from 600m and 700M, 6000 is about the same price as a 9300 with less video, less screen, makes no sense really.

The 6000 is portable, yet it can play games if it has to. It's not the best for games, but it will do, as long as you get a good video card. The 600m can also handle games, or so I've heard, but it's highest video card isn't as good as the 6000's.

OBVIOUSLY YOU DONT HAVE A 9300, IT IS NOT TOO HEAVY OR TOO BIG
get real people, its half an inch deeper and an inch wider than the 6000 and about a pound heavier. I carry mine to work all of the time, the only people who say too big and too heavy are the ones that DONT HAVE A 9300

So it really depends on if you care more about having a lighter notebook with ok video card or a bit heavier one with a better video card.

The 600M is total crap compared to the 6000 and 9300, very poor build and limited capabilities

Correction, if you want a keyboard that is too small to type with, you want the 700M. The 6000 Is not too big, and I have yet to see someone in class that doesnt surf the web or play solitaire instead of pay attention, if you are buying a lappy for class, think twice.
