I need a new notebook and this will be my first notebook... so i have been doing allot of reaserch and im getting stuck onto the Asus Z71V.. so perfeormance wise its great.. so only problem is the screen? is the screen that bad? i mean do u even notice that great gfx card on that screen? is the screen better than lets say.. a ViewSonic Optiquest? couse thats what im now using on my 2.4 800 fsb... also, is it worth getting the pM 2.00 compared to the 1.86? is it even better at all at any notice? also, why is 2x 512 ram more money than 1x gig ram in ynot2k.com? dont make sense to me... also, would this system perform better than my p4c cpu?

thanks..

im new hear and i hope to get some good feedback.

The screen is a matter of personal preference. To start with, there is a degree of sparkle/sheen, it is noticeable, and it can be bothersome. However, less than 25% of the people who bought one found it to be really annoying. If you're not in that category, then you'll like the high resolution and the sharp, vivid colors.

I personally couldn't justify the price jump between the 1.86 and 2.0 Ghz processors for the performance increase.

I agree that 2x512 should be less than 1x1 gig. check out different websites to compare. there are a lot of different resellers who sell the Z71v.

It will be faster than your current machine. The gfx card is awsome, in CS:S you can get great FPS at medium-high-high settings.

The "sparkle" is so overdramatized it's disgusting... it takes all of a day to get used to if you haven't seen it before. More often than not, it would probably go completely unnoticed.

The thing that actually sucks about the screen (at least on the ones I've seen), is the uneven backlighting and leakage. That part was tough to get over, and is what eventually caused me to return/exchange mine.

Considering what I had to go through with that... perhaps in retrospect I should've just kept it.

The term "Sparkles" are over rated and incorrectly used most of the time.

What is really the definition of sparke. I truely believe less than 50% of the people here really truely seen a sparke and understand sparke. The rest basically see something similar ot something that does not look right to their eyes will say sparke!!!

Honestly, I could say one thing. Yes the Z71V have a slight grainy affect. Is it really sparkie or not, I don't know. However I could say one thing for sure is it is similar to a few LCD (none laptop) and laptop LCD I've seen. If you look at the Z71V screen, then go out to bestbuy, Compusa, Fry's etc...and look at any LCD that is non-glossy, non-trubright, non-xbright, the Z71V looks like the average joe. Does this make them all sparke?

To do a true comparison is to compare the next screen has to be 15" - 15.4" and it must have SXGA+ or WSXGA+ or WUXGA. I've looked at a few.

Yes, it does not look like my Toshiba nor my IBM I have next to it. Z71V does have a slight grainy effect on white background. Noticable on usage after a couple of days using it, NO. Only if you purposely stare at it, maybe.

Also, I've recently notice people trying to compare it against a CRT they have. WRONG! You can not compare an LCD screen and CRT screen. That is the typical apple to orange comparison.

None of the lcds in my computer lab have sparkles. None of my friends' laptops have sparkles. It's definitely present and definitely noticeable on my computer. I can see it on more than just white backgrounds, pretty much any solid bright color. I can see it in movies, and sometimes in games. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but it might have led me to a different laptop had I seen it prior to purchase. Other than the screen, my Z71V has been fantastic. I really suggest that anyone considering purchasing one try to find a comparable screen and see how much it bothers them. The uneven lighting and leakage hasn't been a problem for me; I haven't noticed them at all.

And I agree with it not being a sparkle, and more of a graininess. Otherwise the screen is bright and sharp.

The sparle bothered me an all 5min when i first got my laptop. Basically if am not lookin at an all white background or whatever i didnt even notice it. Screen is awesome other then that. I have no complaints... very pleased i get 4hrs with my dual batt setup. I ran it yesterday under office/email power setting from 2:30pm to 5:40 and i still had 40min left on batt.

As the others say, there's nothing wrong with the screen. It's fine.

I'm not going to be much help, but just to add a few things...

I own a Fujitsu n6010 with the 17" Crystal View screen. It kicks my ViewSonic PF790's a** in terms of quality, colour, contrast and even brightness. So, it's quite possible for an LCD to surpass a CRT.

As for the Z71Vs screen... this is something that I've been trying to answer myself for some time now. The only way to find out is to look at it for yourself. It would be similar to describing the way pizza tastes to a person who's never had it before: impossible.

Finally, it's perhaps a bit too simplistic to say, "I find the screen to be good, therefore anyone who says that there are sparkles is just wrong" (although I'm NOT accusing anyone here of doing this - it's just as example). Maybe there ARE sparkles on his/her screen. Then again, maybe they're just really nitpicky. Who knows? If you were to buy 10 identical Honda Civics and put them on a dyno, guess what: you'd get 10 different power outputs. Sure, they're rated the same, but there's enough variation that no two will be exactly identical. Hopefully, most of them will fall into a very close range, but sometimes you might have as much as a 10-15% difference. LCDs, I imagine, are no different.

I really have to agree with everyone else here, the sparkle issue is so overblown....

When I first got this laptop I was really disappointed in the screen, however after a couple of days I find the screen to be very nice and crisp.

I like this laptop more and more every day.

That's good to hear. Right now I am down between the Z70V and Z71V, and come late July, if nothing else better catches my eye, I will be buying one of those 2 laptops. The main decision right now for me is whether I am willing to sacrifice the much faster graphics card in the Z71V for a notebook that looks nicer (just personal opinion), has a better screen, and is about 1 lb lighter. I do game quite a bit, so I am still leaning towards the Z71V.
