Own restore partition and DVD partition

Is there a way to make my own restore partition, i.e. just the OS?

Is there a way to put a linux partition that will just boot DVD playback, like some other brands have on their laptops.

I have i6000 if that matters

For the first part Arconis true image can create a restore partition.

will it work in a similar way as Dell's such has hold down f-11 or whatever on boot?

anyone know about the DVD?

I saw a few 'supersmall' linux distros that were tuned to be MEDIA focussed.

You could try them. I forget what site I found them will see if I bookmarked it

Are you asking for something that will detect a dvd in the drive when you turn it on, and just boot up to play the dvd? You could probably find something like that in a Linux disto. Maybe check linuxiso.org?

yes that's exactly what I want, I've read about other brands of laptops having this feature and was wondering if anyone knew if I could make my Dell do this

that would be really cool.......I am gonna look into that....if anyone finds anything let us know.

oh, yeah, have you googled it yet? I'm gonna look around once I get the chance, let me know if you've had any luck.

1) I use Arconis True Image 8.0 to make a DVD backups/restore partitions...

2) I think what you want is a Live linux distro? There are things like Knoppix... Or are you wanting just like a DVD that you put in after you start linux that is another partition with like games on it or something...

If thats the case, it can be done but its hard... If thats what you want then let me know and i will get you more information...

The only thing I want the Linux partition to do is play DVD's, everything else will be in Windows.

Averatec and HP both have linux partitions on them, where you can put a DVD in the drive, and it will play the DVD similar to a portable DVD player, so it saves battery power apparently, and I wanted to know if there was a way to do this myself.

That thing WeeB found sounds really neat, but I would rather be able to just pop a commercial DVD in and watch it.

I google it but all I could find was stuff about actually putting linux on the laptop

apparently the technology on the averatec is made by intervideo and is called instantON..

if that helps anyone's searches

i just tried movix.. pretty good replacement, if you can't find the autodetecting software. i burned it on a 2" cd, works pretty well. i'll settle for this until someone finds the autoboot..
I wonder if using movix will actually save battery life tho
post #15 of 37
i would think so. no OS is booted, everything is loaded into flash memory.
linux is booted, kind of. I guess it depends on the CPU usage during the playback
post #17 of 37
it's booted off a disc and loaded into flash memory.. still not using the HD

OK Just checked, Acronis creates a Recovery zone on an available partition. you then can activate the recovery manager that acts just like the Dell version by pressing F11 at boot up. I havent used this feature but will give it try. I do have to say that I have backed up, restored, and resize many hdds and have to say hand downs this is the best program. It sells for $50 from acronis's site but you can pruchase it and download it from Newegg for about $33. Definitely worth it!!!

no one else has come up with anything else about the dvd partition?
