Received my new 7700 today!

My new toy arrived at 9:30am this morning and first impressions are very positive indeed - the glossy screen is impressive and the general speed with which all my Apps are loading is notably quicker than the Acer I'm currently typing on.

I do have one query though. Whilst the 7700 is quieter overall than I expected, one of the fans makes a screeching / squeaking sound. Is this normal or have I got a faulty fan ?

Take care

S

*Update*

I received the answer to my query from Alienware Support:
One of the fans is terminal and the laptop needs to be sent back for a replacement fan.

So I shall have it for the weekend but next week it goes in for repair and up to 10 working days away.

Still, the chap I spoke to was very helpful.

Hi,

How long did it take before it stopped ?

The Tech Support chap heard mine and felt it was going to fail at some point so needed replacing but if it sorts itself out I'd be happier. I'm only going to return it next week anyway so it'll be on most of the weekend.

Why do you have to send in your laptop just to replace a faulty fan? Have them send you a new one and do the screwdriver work yourself. Beats losing your laptop for a period of time.

I'd be more than happy to do that but the Technician said he felt it had to be done at the factory. Pity really, I'm gonna miss it.

you may simply be experiencing the chirping fan issue that is common with the clevo D900 laptops (like the 7700). try shutting down the computer and restarting it. or, you can enter hibernation mode and exiting. the point here is to get the fans to turn off, and then turn back on again.

Awww man its a shame. But... At least they will make sure that it wont happen again to the machine. And I would also call them and tell them to check the rest of it out - maybe something has hsaken loose in the fedex truck.

I hope nothing squeaks on mine when I get it -keeping my fingers crossed. I think that for every single AW that is delivered with some fault there must be 100 others that arrived ok and are working just fine. So, I am keeping calm and collected as I await the arrival of my baby.

That's what I did to fix my chirping. At first when I heard it I thought it was going to be a huge problem. But a restart of the system and the problem disappeared. This is a very common problem among 7700 systems and whether it will fix itself or not is different for every system... I'm guessing.

*Update 2*

Well, I booted up my 7700 this morning and it has been running for several hours now and the chirping / screeching fan has not made any noise other than a normal whirring.

After several re-boots yesterday due to my installing various applications, the fan still made the annoying noise all day but today it has 'calmed' down.

Hopefully it won't revert to what it sounded like yesterday.
