chirping fan on 5680 - Page 2

chirping fans

Talked to Sager technical support about this issue. They say no one has contacted them about it. Managed to get the tech to give me a RMA number. Since I live in the local area from Sager will bring it to them to take a look at it. They say it could lbe as simple as replacing the fan unit or whatever? so it seems they don't know what's going on. My notebook seems to run really hot when I'm playing games especially where the cpu or the gpu is located. Playing Max Payne 2 really gets the fans going and I don't even have the settings maxed out. Hopefully they find out if there is a problem or not.

My machine doesnt seem to run hot - AVG CPU temp 52 degrees even when I am stressing it. But it worries me - the sager tech I spoke to said that the fans are no longer accessable by non sager techs. I dont want a damn RMA I just got the thing - I want to be able to look at the fan and fix the problem

Ditto. But they're right; unless there's some trick I'm missing, removing the motherboard of the 5680 from the lower chassis housing's quite a feat. I wasn't able to figure it out, and I'm fairly adept at such things. And, unlike prior models, the fans aren't part of the cover for the CPU -- they're well and truly buried under the motherboard.

I not only don't want to RMA mine just to get the fan fixed; I can't. In a bit over two weeks, I'll be out of the country for a month, and not having the Sager isn't an option.

I sincerely hope someone from Sager addresses this in a meaningful and prompt manner.

What sort of turnaround do people get on with an RMA? From what I've heard here and there it's on the order of 3 weeks - that sounds pretty unacceptable to me (and you have to pay for shipping, right?).

Qustar, I'm having that problem where my fans are seemingly on all the time now and I have an 8890. I also think I noticed the chirping sound today but I thought it was my imagination or something outside.

Well the response I just got from sager is send it in - That is truly a royal PIMA. I do not want to take the chance that they will just give me another laptop and I will lose the perfect screen I have. In addition I do not want to wait for goddamn UPS again who on the first time delivering it took as much time as they felt they could get away with. What I want is a way of checking this myself - I feel certain it is simply a loose fan or a rubbing wire.

I am somewhat unhappy for the first time since getting this laptop. I realise these things happen but it still sucks.

One last point is that if the fans are so well hidden - periodic "blowing out" of them is going to become impossible. From what I understand this was a necessity on earlier models.

Adam or someone can you please get a better response from Sager about this issue than - RMA.

Thanks

Small Update - got an RMA - has to go back because apparently the fans a built ONTO the MB. I am going to express it to sager - they spend about 2 days (or so the guys says) working on it and then 2day it back to me - with luck I can have it back by mid next week.

Also let them know FIRMLY that you expect to not change screens, etc. (which they probably won't, but put it in writing/e-mail).

Yeah I made them add that as a note to the case - and I am going to put it on a not attached to the machine - if they replace the screen I and it comes back with dead pixels etc - the level of anger will not be measurable on anything less than the richter scale

Ok, keep us all updated on the status. If it gets fixed without too much hassle, I may have to go for it too. I definitely won't be happy with a week without my laptop, but it's preferable to listening to this accursed noise for the next three years. BTW - do you have to pay just for shipping to Sager, or for shipping both ways?
You just pay shipping to them. Since I of course will be expressing the hell out of it I am expecting it to be a nasty little shock (Do not forget insurance kids). Sagers may be very reliable machines - but when they do break - you sure as hell wish they hadnt. Let me go on record as saying that I feel putting the fans directly on the MB is one of the dumbest ideas to date. I realise it is probably more efficient at cooling - but it makes what othewise would be a simple fan replacement into an RMA situation.

Hear, hear. Particularly as I can't even RMA mine for another 6 weeks.

Yeah, I have a desktop machine here at my work with a chirping southbridge chip fan (on the mobo) that I need to replace... it's a bitch getting those off.

It's an ASUS A7V133 mobo (older AMD-based)... not a smart idea putting fans directly on mobos... but it happens.

So I get home today thinking to send out my machine right to sager and lo and behold no more chirp. Certainly nothing like the sound file that was posted - everything seems to be working ok (If I am really really picky there is a slight buzz when one of the fans turns on but this might just be normal noise) So I am adopting a wait and see attitude for a few days before I ship this.

Its starting to get on my nerves....

EDIT: Scratch that the chirp is back - goddamnit

Another Update - $106 to send my friggin machine back to sager at a respectable speed. Now I know that sager dosent pay for shipping for repairs - but in my opinion this is not a repair - The machine was broken from word go - which means it was sent out damaged - which means they should have picked up on it in the burn in period - I will be talking to them about getting back some - if not all of my shipping costs.

Oh yeah - almost forgot

That's pretty much how I feel about it - they shipped me a machine with defective fans, they should defray the costs to repair it. That sucks that it's that much to ship it...I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Contacted sager about the shipping - suggested that since this machine was broken out the door then this is not a repair but defective merchandise and how bout they split the cost of shipping with me - or compensate me in some other way. I will let you know how it turns out

This is good. I really dont think we, especially those who are outside of the US, should have to pay for shipping faulty products back to the manufacturer. I have been blessed with a good 5680 so far (just one stuck pixel on the left side; dont even notice it, though), but you never know.

Machine will be back on Friday - turns out that the problem was in the Firmware not the fans so hopefully this issue will not be as big a deal to have fixed for those of you still with the problem. I asked if the firmware update was going to be released but that info wasnt available yet.

Thanks once more to PCTorque who really came through for me on this issue.

The chirping's caused by the firmware? Odd.

Do you have the name of the person who made that statement? It might be useful to others when we call Sager about obtaining the new firmware.
