System Recovery

Thread Starter
Ever since I've had my 9860, it's had overheating problems, every 3-4 days going to the blue screen with a memory dump, or freezing up and making really annoying sounds. Every time, I have to do a hard system-off. It happened again yesterday, and when I went to boot back up I got the following error message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

I tried to use the recovery console, but it only gave me an error every time I tried to access the C drive:

"C:\>dir
Directory of C:\

There is no floppy disk or CD in the drive"

How should I go about recovering my hard drive? Is there a tech support number I can call to further discuss this with someone? Thanks

No, you have a serious problem.

Call tech. support for your laptop, this type of problem will not go away easily . . .

Sorry m8, but get it right, 1st time . . .

Or reformat cleanly with a USB floppy plus CD and just use the laptop with no drivers etc. loaded and notice any problems. If there are none, then slowly load up each device driver as per the manual. Any point where it falls overs, note this and tell the person who sold you the laptop.

I had the same problem

I had the same problem after the power went out when the computer was on.
The c:\windows\system32\config\system file is one of 4 registry files you have to replace from backup. To do this, you need to find an alternative way to boot the computer using either the rescue cd or an alternative product, like a custom linux rescue cd or norton system works.
I used norton system works 2005, it has the SATA drivers built it and it can see the drive. It has a rudimentary file browsing utility that lets you copy files (but not replace); but if you choose to "open" a file, the "open" dialogue will let you rename and delete the files. Backup registry files are in the "System Volume Information" folder (hidden folder) on the main drive. These backups are there hopefully from windows xp doing registry backups during automated restore point creation. the 4 files you need to replace in the config folder are (system, software, Security, Sam). Make sure you get the filename case and spelling right, and get the latest restore backup. I forget what the folder names are, but in "System Volume Information" folder you will find them somewhere in there with numbered folders, highest number is the most recent backup. Just copy those 4 files to c:\windows\system32\config and reboot and pray.
If you have the SATA drive, you will need to make sure you have a driver disk for the windows rescue cd, because sager/clevo didn't slipstream them in. If you are making a linux resuce cd/disk, compile in the promise sata 378 drivers and put in the ntfs filesystem support.

Here is the SATA driver howto for the windows rescue disk that they emailed me:

*Installing Windows without using RAID*

1. Prepare a formatted blank 3.5" 1.44MB floppy diskette, and an external USB
floppy disk drive.
2. Create the ATA Driver Diskette using an operable computer to copy the
Drivers\RAID\ATA folder from the Device Drivers & Utilities + User's Manual
CD-ROM (Navigate/Browse.. to D:\Drivers\RAID\ATA) to the blank floppy diskette.
3. Connect the external USB floppy disk drive to the NP9860.
4. Turn on the computer and press <F2> during the Post to enter to the
PhoenixBios Setup Utility.
5. Set the RAID/ATA Mode Select to ATA Mode. (Please refer to the User Manual
page 6-1 for the settings of the system configured Utility (SCU)).
6. Select the CD-ROM as the first boot device by press <Shift> and <+> keys to
move the CD-ROM drive to the top of the list.
7. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive. Make sure that the
computer is connected to the AC power, and then select Exit Saving Changes to
reboot the computer.
8. Press any key when asked "Press any key to start up from the CD"… Windows XP
is now prepared to run.
9. Press the <F6> key when the message "Press F6 if you need to install third
party SCSI or RAID driver" appears.
10. When the Windows setup menu appear, press the <S> key to "Specify Additional
Device"
11. Insert the ATA Driver Diskette into the external USB floppy drive.
12. Select the "WinXP Promise FastTark 376/378 (tm) Lite Controller" and then
press <Enter>.
13. The system will now read from the floppy drive and return to Windows setup
menu. And then Press <Enter> to continue.
14. Press the <Enter> key to install Windows XP when the Windows XP Setup screen
appears. Press the <R> key to repair a Windows XP installation. To quit without
installing, press the <F3> key.
15. Follow the installation dialog screens until Windows setup completes.
16. Once you are booted into your fresh Windows installation, install the
appropriate drivers from the Device Drivers & Utilities + User's Manual CD-ROM.
